I'm assuming you don't have any male dogs in the house. So you're good there. Just do not let her out alone for the next 3 weeks, at least. Males will come to visit from miles away.
You're already seeing the messy side of heat cycles. Some people here get little panties for their girls to keep the mess down. We don't bother; just mop the floors 20 times a day. :)
Some people see a slight change in personality. The girls could get a little clingy; maybe a little short tempered. We never notice a difference in Ruby.
After Ruby's heat cycle is over, she always blows her coat. She looks like a junkyard dog for a few weeks. And she also breaks out on her muzzle.

In June we went thru our first heat with Snookums (1 yr old in June). Tried human depends undies with a tail hole cut, opted for large trash bags over chair/couch cusions, washable covers/blankets where she would lay. Heat is about 21 days. First week coming in, second week in, third week going out, breedable 12-15 days into heat if I remember right. Guard her when she is outside. It wasn't as bad as I imagined it would be with a dog this big. Snookums kept herself clean, I did floor. Yes your gonna have some mess from drips, Swifter wet mop pads are great. One more heat to live thru then spay. They need the harmones for develpoment of joints and bones. Much better to mop than spend thousands on vet and put a dog thru a life of misery.

thank you both so much! i tried a diaper it lasted 35 seconds she was not having it, i grabbed a pair of old shorts and cut a tail hole so far so good she lets me take them off and put it right back on, thankfully. she really does think shes human now more than ever :p 21 days is a long time i feel bad for them.
