Ghetto hogs

I know absolutely nothing about hog hunting, so understand that I'm not being judgmental or anything. Why does one hunt hogs? Is it just sport? Are feral hogs a problem and hunting helps with the feral population? I'm in an area where I've never heard of anyone seeing a feral hog, so this is new to me.

Yes, feral hogs can be dangerous and very destructive. Yes, they need to be hunted or at the very least removed in some areas. However, I am very much against using catchdogs. Boxers have been used as catch dogs. Most all mastiffs are used as catch dogs. Most hound dogs are used as bay dogs, which I'm not totally opposed to but would never do it myself.

Thanks for the answer. I just never considered that hogs were a problem. Other wild animals, sure, and I know pigs can be nasty - growing up in midwest farm country taught me that, but those were farm animals. Never had a feral hog problem anywhere I've lived.

Not shure why you would be against using dogs...its the most humane safest fastest way.??!!. I have caught hogs that have been shot before...dogs dont fight the hogs fight. A good catch dog simply holds the hog till the hunter ties or dispatches it. Bty. Hardly mastiffs are being used. One there too big and two most importantly have no stamina. Also hound dogs are used by alot of hunters but cur dogs are better. Cur crossed with hound are best

Dang those are some big pigs!

Hope you can fix 'em for dinner.... I know there's more parasite issues with feral hogs, but hopefully freezing and cooking cures that ill.

Nice bag congrats on the big hogs.
Here in California they don't allow catch dogs, only coursing dogs which must not be allowed to mix it up with the hogs.

I hate the smell of wild hog when it is cooked, but love the taste.
Maybe it is just me but there seems to be an unpleasant odor while cooking.

This had no smell to speak of.. I trimmed the fat, seared in butter. The simmered with garlic, onion, water, cumin, tomato paste, diced tomatoes, salt and pepper. Later the last 30 min added potato cubed

Nice!
They thankfully aren't the problem here in AZ that they are back your way but we do have a few pockets of them.

I find it interesting that Az won't allow hunting them in the Topock marsh area.
I'm buying a place there and while driving past the marsh one morning I saw two hogs grazing, estimated at 200 lbs each.
I checked and there is no open season on them in the Topock marsh. Guess they are waiting until they over run the place, typical governmental move.

I wonder if the person you talked to was new or didn't understand how it works with them, there's no season on them because they aren't a regulated game animal. As an invasive species every game and fish officer I've met has encouraged me to shoot as many as I want to, as often as I want to. There are some up near Camp Verde and some down by benson from what I've been told. The only ones I've seen here personally were south of Florence but were 300yards+ and all I had was bird shot and a 22 pistol on me.

Who knows though, maybe there is something special in that area that limits them. I'll look into it if I'm ever doing a cleanup down that way and if it's game on I'll do a nice slow smoke on one for you.

Wow! You're right. I just checked and for some dumb reason they aren't allowing it in there. Give it a few years and they'll have a serious issue with them.

Hi there AZ Boerboel, I figured there were some feral hogs in our state but didn't know exactly where. Interesting to know that there are some south of Florence, as that isn't too far from where I'm located in Avra Valley. Whereabouts are you? Do you know of anybody who hunts hogs with dogs in Arizona? I would like to learn more about this & probably participate too.

I'm in the east valley currently.
I honestly think the ones I saw south of florence were some ones that had recently escaped.
I don't think we have enough of them in the state for hunting them to really be a big thing. If we did believe me my BB would eat an awful lot of pig meat.
The only things I know of that people run dogs on are birds, mountain lions, coyotes and small game.

We have a problem with them in my area of FL. too. We back up to a 1900 acre nature preserve & they will occasionally come onto the property. Luckily they don't come near the dog's yard, but we can see the destruction on the far side of the property. It's open season here; the state is very happy to have folks who will take them out since they're so destructive. There are about 10 people who will go into the woods/marsh & drag out one or two hogs every couple of weeks. All of their dogs are curs, or cur mixes.
