Hacking Cough

I need some advice. I have a vet appointment for Max, my 13 mo CC who at times has a dry hacking cough. Especilly when he wakes up. It sems to almost result in him vomiting but stops before that happens. He is current on all vacinations, bordatella and heart worm also. Any advice would be appreciated. He is eating and playing like normal. The cough sems to be increasing in frequency. Thank you. Dan

Honestly it sounds like Kennel Cough. Dry hacking cough when waking and when exercised? Yes, kennel cough, even though he's vaccinated. Kennel cough mutates faster than the human flu, the vaccine is only usefull because it MAY reduce the chances of the KC turning into pneumonia.

Glad you have vet appt...have you told them you think it may be KC? If not I suggest you do before you arrive, I know with my vet practice if it is suspected KC they ask you to wait outside/in your car, then they come get you and bring you via the side door rather than through the main reception to lessen the risk of it spreading, which IMO is a wise thing to do.

Yes kennel cough can occur even with a vaccinated dog. I've seen it many times before. And I second informing your vet that it's possible that's what he has. So they can take the necessary precautions & not put other dogs at risk.

I would suspect kennel cough as well, I don't know when you appt is at the vets but you can give a bit of peppermint tea with some honey mixed in and that will soothe his cough and throat and give him some relief until the vet can see him.

Max has been on Panacur for 2 days-Dr. thinks it is whipworm & Max's cough is 88% better already. But Max has lost almost 8 lbs-he is now 107lbs and is 13 months old--most likely due to the worms which cause the hacking cough. Question is should I add food to put the weight back on or stick to his 4 cups per feeding in both the AM & PM? Thanks for the help Dan.

I'm not sure this is the right answer but on his current feeding schedule after he's done eating does he look for more food? My gut says to stay on his current feeding schedule but then I think that maybe adding another 1/2 cup wouldn't be such a bad idea just for the time being. What food is he on?

I second Raechiemay. Now that the worms are on their way out, his weight should come back naturally.
