Hi from me and my bestie Ryder! I joined this site because I love my bullmastiff!

Now to the bad news...found out today that my big guy has hip dysplasia. I need advise! It's a mild form, and our vet says he shouldn't need surgery, but he is very sensitive to pain and cries(loudly) every time he gets up. He is an AKC registered bullmastiff. He will be 2 Nov. 1. He weighs 77 lbs. He won't jump into the car...gets his front legs up, then I lift him the rest of the way. The vet perscribed 2 100mg Norocarp daily. An I am currently giving him a Glucosamine supplement by Pro-sense, which my vet says is good enough. I'm not convinced! I'm concerned about liver damage with Norocarp, and I don't think the supplement is enough. We live in a rural community, the vet is a cattle vet. Any ideas where I should go from here. I can't handle the cries...I cry with him.

I've done a little research and found out about "Hubrihound" Anyone familiar with this? Thanks so much for any assistance!

Welcome and sorry to hear about the hip dysplasia. Did the vet confirm with xrays? You will have to limit his exercise and avoid excessive running, walking, climbing stairs, jumping into car/bed, etc.

Titan has arthritis in one leg and his vet prescribed Novox which is the generic for Rimadyl which is carprofen. You are correct that these drugs have serious side effects with no warning before death. I stopped the Novox with Titan and I did research for an alternative. After extensive research, I decided on a combo of Arthramine 1000mg, Glucosamine 1000mg and 6 baby aspirin once a day and it has worked wonders. The only side effect to the combo is possible internal bleeding due to the baby aspirin but it's a rare side effect and as long as give the combo with a meal, it should be ok. I believe the decision I made is better for Titan due to the severe side effects of carprofen.

How long has he been on Norocarp? I noticed a difference in Titan with the Novox the next day and the new combo works the same as the Novox.

Keep your pup lean to prevent more weight on the hip.

Hi & welcome to the forum.
Loads of great people and resources here.

I don't know Hubrihound... but I notice it has some extract from mussels? You could look into adding green lipped muscle (GLM) powder as a supplement... it has all sorts of good joint minerals in it and lots of anecdotal evidence that it's good stuff. I have some and both Denna and our cat LOVE the taste of the stuff, too - it has a clean fishy/ocean smell to it.

Interesting info on GLM here: New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel Uses, Benefits Dosage - Drugs.com Herbal Database
and here: Green Lipped Mussels: Why Your Dog Needs Them! | Dogs Naturally Magazine

Mostly anti-inflammatory evidence, but good for joint health, too.

Yes, it was confirmed by XRay. Yesterday in fact. I gave Ryder the pills when we got home. He is already feeling better. Eating, drinking, and has gone #1, and #2 (which he hadn't done)! He has never been allowed on the furniture as I'm allergic to dogs. He is actually a pretty laid back dog. Doesn't run much...never seen him jump so limiting exercise isn't an issue. I think he's pretty lean, but may cut back his feed to where I can seen his ribs a little better. Thanks for all the info! I'll check into Everything. I'm concerned about what to do after he finishes the Norocarp or whatever I decide to give him. Call the vet each time he has an episode?
