Hot car law passes Florida Senate, provides legal protections Published 4:06 PM EST Jan 30, 2016 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —Florida Senators have given final approval to a bill that provides good Samaritans legal protections if they break into a car to save children or pets. The bill, which passed Thursday, means people who see an animal or person locked inside a hot car can smash a window to rescue them without facing legal action if the car's owner wants to sue for damages. The bill requires that rescuers call 911 immediately after they break into a car, and stay with the vehicle until first responders arrive. I'm so glad this law passed. If I ever saw a child or pet in distress in a locked car, a threat of lawsuit never would have stopped me before, but at least my butt is covered now.
