I need help....

my 2y/o male cane corso is terrified of people. We always took him to dog parks he went to work with me every day and he is still fear agressive with people. He has never bit anyone but he growls barks sometimes lunges.

I need help. I am at the last straw and dont know what to do.

Does anyone else have a corso or another mastiff with this problem?

Today he got out and cahsed my neighbor to the truck and starting running around.. the running around was to stay away from me he think its playing when he runs from me.

I highly recommend working with a trainer but handling him yourself...it is less expensive and you can see what works and what doesnt...it can and will be stressful at times, but it feels so good to accomplish stuff together, and it strengthens the bond between you and your dog...I have gone through it :)

thank you so much!.. he is an awesome dog. i taught him all his tricks he no sit laydown, stay, shake, wave, highfive, bow, close the door, turn, jump from sit, crawl, pick up & give. Very very smart dog just insucure with people =/

Unfortunately, there are a lot of corsos with this same problem...mine is one of them...with lots of work, these problems can be worked with and managed

ya.. we knew this getting him but thought we socialized him enough.. but guess not. but we know he cant go places with us and we take him for walks at night he is on a leash at all times outside in car.... we know better... but we still love him!

Mastiff Mom,

I've run into many Corso's with this issue, I believe that it has alot to do with how breeders are neglecting the temperaments and worrying too much on the physical sides of the breed. Blame AKC for that.

Anyways, you should seek professional help in this matter. This dog would do well with a dose of fundamental training in real life situations. You mentioned that your dog knows how to sit, stay, shake, wave and close the door but would he do it with a stranger in the room or more importantly at lets say in front of a Wal-Mart with people walking all over the place? Chances are your gonna say NO and in this case then your dog doesn't really know and respect commands therefore you need to start right back from the beginning with him.

Another thing your doing is avoiding problems by taking him out at night, I understand why your doing it but he'll never get the idea of what you expect from him if you continue to do this. Socialization is under-rated, most don't understand the importance of this. Its a training routine in itself and must be worked on everyday, just like someone minds there manners everyday.
Sending this dog to a "boot camp" will only alters this dogs perception of how he views people and even you in the long run.

My suggestion is to work with this dog in formal fundamental obedience while people and activities are all around him, take it slow (few people, few activities at first) then as you see him getting better you add more obstacles in front of him. When I say obstacles, I don't mean jumps and such but work him around more people and in different environments. Again this will take you months for him to overcome and if properly channeled you can make vast improvements with his temperaments but again it will take lots of time.

Its good to see that at least your looking for help, these dogs are not cheap to own. I feel proper ownership of this type of breed is going to come with a cost. Training is one of those, invest in your future with this dog or more than likely you'll live in fear of him reacting in the wrong way and worst of all having to get rid of him.

Thanks for reading my posting and let me know how it all goes.
