  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Inlaid wooden boxes.

Pretty wood, don't want to paint it every couple years lol what kind of wood do you deal with?

I can do anything. Woods that hold up well in the weather are usually very dense and heavy.

I think I would use Brazillian cherry just because it seems fitting. :p

k now the million dollar question......HOW MUCH HAHAHAHA

I think $50 each for my labor and expendable materials.

Wood cost would vary.

Brazilian cherry runs $8-9 per board foot around here.
White oak might be about the same. It's also a good outdoor wood.
Teak runs at $25-ish per board foot.
I'm not sure about Redwood. Seems like it would be reasonable here. :p
Cedar is cheaper and I can get it at Lowe's.

If I have to finish them, I'd charge an extra $25.(for both)

The outdoor finish I use runs about $80 per gallon, so it's a decent finish. You might want to just finish them yourself because it's something that needs to be done every couple of years anyway. Nothing lasts forever outside.

Oh, I don't really know if shipping to Canada is a million dollars. If so, you might want to stick with the lighter woods, like Cedar and Redwood. The others are very heavy.

You could also look for local woodworkers. There are woodworking forums you could check out and try and find someone closer. :)

A 5lb box shipped USPS Priority (NOT flat rate) to Canada would be just under $40. I don't recommend shipping first class USPS, or flat rate priority (international) USPS, with anything valuable. Fedex might be worth looking into as quite possibly more reliable. I've never shipped wood and have no idea if 5lbs is a reasonable weight, but it gives you an idea of what you're looking at.

5lbs is too light. Especially with any of the hardwoods. Also, these would be big.

It would be way more cost effective to get someone local.

I mean, I would totally make them because I know it's hard to find custom things for our weird breeds. That's why I started this thread.

I don't need to sell things to feed the kids or anything. :p

I love trying to get things shipped to me, everyone I talk to fedex, purolater etc, they all say oh ya we can ship to you, then I give them my address and then they are like "um no we don't deliver there, where do you live??" hahaaha

I am interested an will let you know shortly, I think maybe I will get them unfinished and do it as a winter project.

Its probably worth it to me to get my passport and come down and pick them up, im sure the shipping on these would be the same price as the passport lol and if I was to find someone local they would probably charge me 200 a piece lol, so 6 of 1 half a dozen of the other, maybe I will get one at a time lol

If you're coming down to Seattle then you need to stop by my place and take Hector with you.

Wait. Would you pay $200 a piece...
I may have to rethink my pricing.

;P

I should mention that the local would likely hand me a cardboard cut out hahhahahahah, I think your prices are reasonable for an unfinished piece and no I could not afford 200, im a working poor person lol, I would like to pair the 2 pieces with a wide enough curved wood to put the address on it underneath the 2 dogs , so nothing to huge but not small either lol, I will have to take some measurements first and decide on an actual size and I think a lighter weight wood would be fine as I can stain it as dark as I want it, correct?? I have a yucky boring chain link driveway gate so why not dress it up a bit lol

I could do them myself but it seems my brand new router I bought a couple years ago grew legs and walked away lol, I have the box of new bits I bought with it but I have no idea where the router went. Maybe I loaned it to someone and I forgot who I loaned it to, I don't know, maybe it will return one day, so ya still cheaper to get them from you lol

Yes, you can stain it however you like. Keep in mind that most soft woods absorb the stain unevenly. Especially penetrating oil finishes. You can put a seal coat of shellac(unwaxed) first or use a gel stain. Or maybe you like the way it looks. Some people do. It usually makes the grain patterns look lighter. I can send some cut offs and you can experiment to see what you like.

You should also sketch what you have in mind for the whole thing.

I could also just make you a template out of 1/4" MDF. If you have a jigsaw and a router with a template bit, you could easily make as many wooden dogs as you want. Then you could sell them for $200 each. :p

I figured 5lbs would be low, but the size wouldn't be an issue unless there's a ton of packaging, at least for the above listed sizes anyway.

I want to see pictures of the finished product though!

Those boxes are beautiful!

I'm really lucky because I'm right near the WA borders. I have everything shipped to "Ship Happens" so that I can reap the benefits of the cheap "within the US" shipping rates. :D Mwahahaha
