Invisible Fence

We have a professionally installed Dog Guard invisible fence. It was fine for my Rottie because he didn't like to be outside unless I was with him. He did his business and came right back in and if I was outside he was by my side. Plus he didn't have a high prey drive for the breed. I'm considering adding a Cane Corso to my family (my Rottie passed away over a year ago), but am concerned about its effectiveness with this breed. Some of my neighbors are successfully using their IFs with English Mastiffs and Boxers. Can you plz let me know an IF contains your dog? Thx!

I am moving to a new house on 2 acres in a month or so and was considering an invisible fence for my three. I actually just logged on to ask about it. If anyone has any input on them and their effectiveness or any other options it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am moving in 2 weeks. I really need some advice from ya'll on what kind of fence to use. I have 3 big dogs (80 lb Lab, 96 lb GS/GP, 160 lb EM) and will be trying to fence 1.5 acres in a rural area. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not a fan of the efences personally, for a variety of reasons, but whether they'd work for your dogs its hard to say. It'll take time to train them to it though. You might be better off fencing off like 1/2 acre for them, we've got 6ft chain link.

You can try, but keep in mind that highly driven dogs (prey drive or protection drive for example) will go right through it when their drive kicks in. Dogs with high pain tolerance will also frequently go through it. And it can cause skittish dogs to become even more so.

It is also prone to regular fail in the form of the collar batteries dying.

It also does not protect your dogs from anything. Be it wildlife, or idiot neighborhood kids. Nor does it give a sense of safety to anyone who walks by, including police. There have been numorous cases where a dog was contained by an efence and the officer didn't know that and just saw a dog charging them and so shot the dog.

Also keep in mind that training a dog to one essentially requires you to show the dog where the line is nd you do this by deliberetly shocking the dog.

I have to agree completely with Ruth, and mainly the fact that stray animals, kids, someone trying to sell something, etc. has no idea that the dog is "contained." I have had dogs go right through them and suffer the pain. Once they realize they can do it, they'll never mind the fence again. For the breeds we keep I don't think it is the answer, unfortunately.

I would never use an electric fence for a dog. Electric fences are not a good source of containment for a dog. Just because the fence has been proven to work on some dogs doesn't mean it will work for your dog and it certainly doesn't mean that it's escape proof. An actual fence isn't escape proof either but it would make me feel a bit more comfortable than an electric fence due to the fact that an electric fence has more cons that pros.

Thanks. We will be living about 2 miles outside of a small town at the end of a dirt road with only few house along the way so thankfully shouldn't have too many neighborhood kids or police. Wildlife could be a problem though as we are up against the woods. And other dogs as most are allowed free roam of the area.

I have 3 Boxers and 1 Cane Corso. I have electric fence and we have never had any problems. I brought home all of my Boxers as adults and it only took 1 time for them to figure out what was the deal!! Also, I bought collars with multi-level correction. If they get close it will beep, closer it vibrates, and then well the final shock!! They have never even crossed other than the initial lesson and I have 2 stray cats that torture them, they never get out tho!!

I live rural australia, the type of fence you describe is used a lot here, successfully. Plenty of pig hunting dogs here, that remain on property with these.
I dont use them, as my rottie had a fetish for pain, and would launch himself for fun. But he was rather special.
