Life in the soggy Southern U.S.

This is a question regarding fleas and mosquitoes! I live in Southeast Texas, where it is very similar to Louisiana, with lots of slow moving waterways, and soggy ground. Mosquitoes are a problem 10 months out of the year. With that being the case, heart worms is a concern, especially since Agador and I love to take walks in a couple vacant fields near our home. I've read several people condemning things like vaccines for pets, with emphasis to make sure to be wary of over medicating our pets, so I was hoping some of the experts here might be able to give advice on heart worm medication. Vets generally advise giving a monthly pill to ward off heart worms. What do ya'll think?

I use cattle pour on ivermectin. A bottle wil last forever. I put it on a small piece of bread. Google for the dosage. I use .5ml for a dog that weighs 50-100lbs.
