Mastiff / AKITA(?) - Can anyone help me?

I am in love with the Mastiff and have been for some time. I moved to my house a year ago and am ready to settle in with my new best friend. I have 2 acres and fenced a good sized area with 700 linear feet of 5' tall heavy guage field fencing, built a seperate 20x30 protected kennel area and have three crates (bedroom, enclosed porch and a travel crate for our mountain house). I've always kept my dogs inside with me and will be doing the same with whomever I end up with.

SO, I found this little guy at an area shelter. The shelter worker suggested initially that he might be a Mastiff / Sher Pei mix but has suggested that it might be a Mastiff/Akita mix. Anyone care to help me with the ID? Sorry the pics are a bit blurry. The little bugger was very excited to see me. Don't expect anyone can give me a definitive answer but thought you guys might offer and educated guess.

To the best of my knowledge, which isn't huge, the brindle colouring is more typical of a Shar-Pei than an Akita

I was thinking the other way around.... I’ve seen more Akitas with Brindle coats... I’ve never even heard of a Shar Pei being brindle until I just googled it

If it were a Mastiff/Shar Pei mix is would definitely have a much more smooshed muzzle and more wrinkles.

If I were to choose between the too I would say Akita

Was the Mother Mastiff or something? Because just from looking at her, Mastiff wasnt my first thoughts... she has more of a shepherd/akita look

Just my opinion.... hope that helps

It's difficult to tell at that young an age.

I had a GSDXAkita from a local shelter. He was one of the best dogs EVER.

The ears look Akita and definitely if she were sher pei/ Mastiff she would have many more wrinkles!

She is a cutie though!

I had never heard of a brindle Shar-Pei! Learn something new everyday! The brindle may have came from the mastiff tho, considering it is a very popular color. And there is a breed of mastiff called the American Mastiff that doesn't have the pendulant lips and wrinkles. We have Akita/English Mastiff puppies and they are all brindle, got it from their daddy the Mastiff! Great dogs they are.:)

I hope this helps you. This is a 6 week old EM/Akita cross. Her name is Bella. She is brindle, but got it from her father. All the puppies in the litter were brindle. Genghis, Bella's brother, is white with black stripes. Almost like a white tiger. I can't get the picture to upload directly, so here is the link. Good luck! http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss76/heatherdnut/Jojis%20puppies/PICT0073.jpg The date on the picture was wrong. That picture was taken in late May of 2010

I have a Cane Corso/Akita mix. most people just say she is pittie mix, but I have seen her parents. Her life was rough starting out, her ears were lopped off homemade style, and they starved her at 10 weeks. She is now 6 months old and growing like a weed. LOL. Attaching a pic from when she was 3 1/2 months old.

mixes are tough to tell. The brindle could be from the mastiff and it could be mixed with anything! It could be an Akita mix or shepherd. I would guess not sharpei, as I don't see any sharpei in there at all and it looks like it is mixed with a "furrier" breed as the puppy looks fuzzy.

Hard to tell, I don't see any spitz in that dog, so I discard akita, but I do see big paws and small ears as in shar pei.

Well I saw a Doberman/Mastiff pup not long ago that looked very very much like her so she could be an Akita/Mastiff but as others have said it is very hard when it is a mix to tell.

I have a half Shar Pei now (Tao), had Shar Pei in past. She doesn't look like it, but tail curles over back, black tongue and inside mouth. The coat on a Shar Pei is usually kind of stiff not soft or fluffy. Some rolls or wrinkle at back, neck and face. Maybe Akita mix? What is size and age? Hard to tell it picture. If you have a strong feeling for the puppy, don't worry about the mix, just love it! Bones, our Dobie/Choc. Lab mix came from our local shelter and it was love at first sight. She is totally nuts, lots of fun, a grin a day and I wouldn't take a million dollars for her. Good Luck.

I don't see Shar pei in the pup at all! The reverse brindle coloring could be mastiff, but the facial features don't indicate that, I don't see any broadining of the skull nor the bony bumish skull extention between the ears that extends backwards. He does have a nice slim face like an Akita. Is his tail curvy and full? Akitas tend to be very leggy and energetic and shar pei's tend to be shorter and stockier. Either way she is a beautiful pup!
