Livingston animal shelter extends adoption time, may drop ‘bully breed’ ban

Howell — A two-year ban on adopting out stray “bully breeds†at Livingston County Animal Control is expected to be lifted and replaced with a policy that affects only those animals deemed aggressive.

The elimination of the breed-specific policy, which included pit bull terriers and American bulldogs, is one of many changes at the animal shelter, the focus of animal activists, pet owners and taxpayers claiming too many animals have been euthanized.

A fact-finding committee of the Livingston County Commission recommended the ordinance change, which will be presented to the full board today.

The breed-specific ordinance was adopted in 2008 following the deaths of two people, including a 92-year-old man, by a roaming pack of mixed-breed American bulldogs.

In 2009, 35 of 63 dogs euthanized were “bully breeds,†and fell under the definition of aggressive dogs, she said. Bully breed dogs without collars have four days to be claimed by owners; it is seven days for dogs with collars. That time frame will remain.
