TY!

I had to go check your standard. I don't think her muzzle is that long, TMs have HUGE heads under all that fluff. Be glad you're not showing under the AKC standard, it was just changed last year so that the muzzle shouldn't be more than 1/2 the head measurement (which REALLY makes Apollo's muzzle to long.....)

Mooshi looks great, but what we really need is more Allie pictures.

measure the head from where to where?

read here and here

Basically the measurement of muzzle from nose to stop (right below the eyes) and then from just above the eyes to the point at the back of the skull if I understand it right.

Ruth I measured Moo last night. Her muzzle is 3.5 inches and her head is 6.5 inches so just lightly over half. I guess that makes her a failure in the eyes of the AKC standard. :-( Just for a laugh I measured across her head as well from top of ear to top of ear and that is 9".

lol! I don't care for the new standard, and neither do a bunch of other people, but it got passed so we're stuck with it for a few more years no matter what. But I can't think of a single breeder I know who's breeding for a shorter nosed dog.

But see, I told you her muzzle wasn't to long! I haven't measured Apollo, partially cause I don't care THAT much, and partially so if I'm ever asked in the show ring I can honestly say I don't know. But looking at pictures I'm pretty sure his muzzle is over 1/2 the head measurement.

Yeah you told me so and you are right. :) I think you will be very suprised if you do measure him, I was shocked at Moo's result when I did. I would have bet money that her nose was the same length, if not lonher, that the skull measurement.

Oh I don't think he's 1-1, but I'm reasonably confident he's over the 1/2 mark too (which in an AKC show would be a major fault, I need to get him cross registered with hte UKC, so I can do their shows too). But yah, all that fluff hides the shape of the head really well.

I'd have not minded if they'd changed the standard from the "1-1 or a little less" to "muzzle 1/2-1 of the head measurement", but instead they changed it to "muzzle 1/3-1/2 the head measurement" which is beyond pushing the bounds of being bracycphalic.

Agree!! That could cause some serious issues with future breeding if the breeders actually tried to stick to these guidelines! Yikes!

I honestly can say I don't know of a single breeder who's going to be shortening muzzles (which doesn't mean that there isn't someone who is). And interestingly enough, no-one I've talked to can think of a single instance where a dog has been given that major fault for a too long of a muzzle. Actually several experienced judges, when questioned on their choice of dogs (usually over color, that being another thing that changed in the standard), informed the quesitoner that the "new standard is too vague" and therefor can't be used effectively.

Im glad to hear it. Its a blessing this breed is rare and the breeders i know of are more concerned with keeping 'true to form' and health rather than something like this. Who wrote the guidline and where on earth did they come up with this I wonder?

The American Tibetan Mastiff Association, which has a reputation for "loosing applications", and "loosing renewal payments", and making it difficult to join in the first place, which has board members who aren't American, or at least full time residents, (or Canadian), which has at least one board member who's not only never owned a TM, has never judged TMs, and is infact not even a Working Group judge......

The standard change caused a huge uproar in the entire show dog world actually. The AKC got letters and emails from litterally around the world, from people not even associated with the breed. So many that they changed their policy of how future standard changes would be handled, with a space for public comment made BEFORE the final vote instead of AT the final vote. But they passed the TM standard anway....

This makes no sense...I understand what you say but it makes no sense!!

I think they are trying to create a giant Tibetan Spaniel. Or get the TMs to look enough like spaniels that they can market the actual spaniels as mini-TMs.

It seems like a good plan... o_O
