My mastiff is super shy and skiddish to go anywhere? How do i train her better?

My mastiff puppy is almost 5 months and she is super playful and lovey dovey. However I am trying to socialize her and when people come over she is fine but if i try and take her some where she acts scared...especially when i open the car door. Heck she will only go outside through the back door. When i tried to open the front door she wouldn't step out. Also, it's been really hard to get her used to a leash so much that she just lays on the floor. Any one else have similar challenges? Not sure what to do..she will only follow people that she knows.

Unfortunately, you kinda missed the prime socialization period, so you may have to take things slower now. One of the very most important things to do is set her up for success.

For example (off the top of my head), if you know a place is going to scare her, then don't take her directly to that place and just let her "deal with it". Instead try to take it slower, take baby steps. Maybe take her to that place but leave her in the car, sit with her so she is comfortable, and just let her watch out the window and feed her treats. Repeat that until it is routine and she is comfortable. Once you have gotten her comfortable in that situation, then up the criteria a bit by, for example, doing the same thing but not sitting with her. When she is comfortable with that, up it again. Maybe do the same thing but roll the window down this time... Point is, take baby steps and listen to what she is telling you. If she isn't comfortable or isn't "feeling it" one day, fine, don't push it. Try again the next day.

You say she only follows certain people - fine - then take those people with you to new places and let her experience the new places from within her comfort zone. Set her up for success. Socialization is about building POSITIVE associations with the environment - don't flood her! No Cesar Milan techniques - NO FLOODING!

That's my $00.02. I hope it helps.

I agree with Brad.

For example. My Lil Man was scared of being out in the open (field, parking lot, etc.) So I would take him to the bayou behind my house and just sit there with him. He would sit in my lap sniffing around us. Every day he would step away a little further and so on. Now we go on walks all over and if he is getting nervous or anxious he paws at me or if he hears something unfamiliar, I will kneel down or sit and he will sit in my lap or sit against me. I will just sit there for a min and let him take everything in. Then move forward.

This also builds trust. He knows if something is scary he can always come to me for comfort. Versus running away in terror.

Hope that helps!
