Samson is 10 weeks old and is so sweet.
His mother is a purebred Bullmastiff And his father is a purebred German Shepherd but he looks and acts more like the Bullmastiff breed. Samson weighs 29 lbs. he has gained around 5 lbs a week. I measure his food and make sure he's not over eating. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if his weight gain is typical of the Bullmastiff breed.

Key to a healthy mastiff is slow and steady growth. 5 lbs a week is not bad. What kind of food are your feeding Samson?

Samson is gorgeous, love the face!

cute pup he does look like a Bullmstiff ! 5lbs a week is pretty good. Volka (CAO) was growing about 4-6 lbs a week for a while especially between 3 and 6 months then he slowed down to about 12 lbs a month and still growing as such at 8 months old.

Welcome to the forum.

5 lbs sounds about right to me. My girl gained 3 a week except during growth spurts.

Samson is so adorable.

Denna (EM) gained at about 0.5lb/day.

Biggest thing is just to keep him lean as he grows - make sure ribs are easily felt, and one or two even seen (depending on his hair) as he's running around.

He looks like a big sweetie!

Thanks for the info. I can feel his ribs easily.
And he is very active.

I am feeding him Iams large breed puppy food.

He is a great pup. I really like the bullmastiff breed. I was kind of nervous about getting him at first cause I've heard some negative things about the breed, but the more I've read the more I realize its a great breed if you have the time to invest in socializing and training.
We have Samson signed up for obedience training and I stay home so I have been able to house train and crate train him.

I think I will now I wouldn't want any other breed.

Thanks guys, I think he's really cute too!
I have a hard time finding any German Shepherd in him. He looks exactly like his mother.

Yes, as soon as we got him I called and registered him for training.
Really , to train me!;-) I have small childre so I need him to be under control .
So many of these dogs are great but hard to deal with and end up in shelters.
I think investing in the training pays off in the long run.

Can you please post an update on Samson? i am looking into adopting a bull mastiff/German Sheperd mix. Can you tell me if you have noticed any serous health issues? I understand that health is directly related to the parents. However, I thought that maybe with the mixed breed that the pup may be less prone to certain ailments.
