I have been wanting a cane corso for a long time. I have done lots of research on them and have come to the conclusion that I will probably need some experience with large dogs, so im looking into getting a bullmastiff first.. I currently have a 20 pound boston/pug and hes awesome but my dream is to have big dogs. Im super active, (l love taking him roller blading or hiking) theres always someone home and we take him EVERYWHERE! even if that means im staying in the truck with him. So my question is, what do you guys suggest? Should I first gain more experience with large dogs before taking this step?

Are you able to volunteer at a shelter that has large dogs or at a rescue? You can get some good experience (at least a good look) without the life-long committment that may not be for you. I don't know much about other types of mastiffs. Max is a challenge and his size and strength are not to be dismissed!

I had never owned large dogs proir to getting my babies and to be honest i was nervous for a minute... my husband had experince with them wich eased my mind. but once getting them and doing daily training they are wonderful. i am sure they would be a horror if they were not trained but if you plan on doing training and a lot of it go with what you want as long as you have done the research and are ready for the comitment

Re: New two mastiffs, suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion! Theres an spca not too far from where I live I can try. Also my friend has a german snot (nearly as big but its something) I can start bracing for strength hee hee
definately need a little more experience though.

How many do you guys have?

I have one EM and a choco lab. I've had rotxlab mix and other labs. Max my EM is my big guy at 175 pounds. He can be stubborn but we work on manners a lot. Training to not run after squirrels and chase cats from the beginning has helped!

I've had pitbulls my entire life and considered them big dogs, until I got my Cane Corso. At 7.5 months old he is so much bigger than my two pitbulls now. I think if you are willing to put in the time and effort to train them, you will be just fine.

Also, rescuing is great but if you don't have much experience it might be good to go through a reputable breeder. That way they can support you as your puppy grows.
