Glad to be a part of this forum. After 10 long years of wanting a presa canario I am finally the proud owner of a beautiful 10 week old brindle male presa canario puppy. I have to say I am a little disappointed not in the dog but in how over hyped these animals are, maybe I AM a little disappointed in the dog as I expected "more". As an experienced dog handler and trainer far from professional but I've had 2 sport trained rottweilers about 15 years ago so I know a few things about dogs. I purchased my presa from a well known reputable breeder so I believe I got a top quality dog but if this is top of the line this breed is definitely lacking. It seems like it is hit or miss as far as getting a "solid dog". One thing I noticed in my puppy is a lack of drive he will chase a rag and bite it but will let go as soon as he senses some resistance he lacks the tenacity of a good rottweiler or german shepard I have an English bulldog that will hang from a spring pole and hold like his life depends on it. He is very alert and attentive but very soft and at times shy and timid he whines and barks anytime he's left alone I know he's only 10 weeks but not something I expected after hearing all the hype about how much of a confident natural protector these dogs are. I initially got this dog to do some advanced protection training with but as of right now I'm not 100% sold this puppy has what it takes. I've seen a lot of these dogs bite and go crazy behind fences but I've seen poodles do that too. I'm looking for some insight from someone who has experience. Do presas develop that drive later on what can I expect?

I'm sure more experienced owners will chime in, but my two cents is that he's a ten week old puppy and new to your household. He's body is growing and tender which maybe why he let's go when he feels resistance. I'd let him settle in, get to know you and grow his confidence. Take this time to focus on bonding, socialization, and obedience.

Again, my two cents.

He is only 10 weeks old lol give him some time he will come around. Once he settles in you will be more than impressed. Each dog is different some mature faster than others. Ten weeks is way to soon to judge a dog as a disappointment. Once he gets all of his shots and settles in you will be more than impressed.

Owning a Presa Canario is like magic!

Did you get him from a breeder that works and titles their dogs? Did the breeder evaluate the puppies for temperament and drive?

He's way too young to show the tenacity your wanting, press's develop slower then shepherds since I own a shepherd and my friend owns two pressas, from about 8 months to 2 years is when you'll see the real deal. Be patient keep playing tug of war and nurture Him.

I think there is only one schutzhund II titled presa in the world I may be wrong. Not titles but working imported lines.

Awesome that's what I was looking for.

my experience has been completely different. this breed (like many others and as was stated) has almost every kennel based in "working" stock but has very few breeders who maintain presa working traits.

I totally agree with you on that.

we are in the market for a pup if you need to rehome him I can take him (California)... You sound like you would enjoy my high drive Giant schnauzer (i am in trouble for her running down the stairs and scaring the neighbor she just doesnt Stop!!!)...

If i were you, i would probably wait it out, from what i know he's too young to even show too much. Not all puppies have it in them. Did the breeder determine the puppy to be a working quality pup?

How's the pup coming along? my pup is just over 5 months never barked at a single person yet but I socialise him with all sorts every day hope he doesn't find his dog aggression he will be what he was meant to be does like to dominate when he's playing but 1 day a playmate will take it to the next level then we shall see how he handles it untill then I'm happy with him the way he is

Well he just turned 5 months exactly yesterday and I'm still very unsure about him. My pup does bark at strangers but I'm not sure if he's barking out of fear or as a warning. He still lacks confidence when he's around other dogs I took him hiking a few days ago and he was terrified of a German Shepard pup his same age the German Shepard approached my press tucked his tail in between his legs and ran. He won't let older dogs mount and dominate him he gets very aggressive at this point I'm very confused. He still lacks drive he will bite a rag but doesn't have a good grip or hard bite.

He's almost 60 lbs I'm feeding him once or twice a day a lot of people try to get their dog to grow very big really fast but I like my dogs to grow slow so they have less joint problems later. Adult size is genetics.
