Hello everyone im Debbie and im new to the forum. I own a 6 month old French Mastiff who is awesome, he's been on Wellness Core grain free food ocean formula since he was 9 wks old. Should i of started him on large breed puppy food ? I ask because i went to a pet show this weekend and met a lady who owns 2 bullmastiffs and she told me i needed to switch him to a large breed puppy food formula because of the percentage in protein and the glaucosomine and chondroiten. Then someone else gave me another advice and said do not put him on large breed puppy food because he will grow to fast and cause him to have joint and hip issues. Please can anyone give me the correct answer to this confusion i do not in any way want to cause any harm to my puppy. Large breed puppy food or grain free all life stages ???? Thanks in advane Debbie

Whats the protein percent on the food?? It should say on the bag....if it's fish, it might not be too high

I prefer all stages grain free food, wellness is a great food! We use Acana grasslands.
I do supplement with Glucosamine Chrondroitin as well as Ester C on top of that, I get human grade pills from Walmart/Costco and grind with a mortar and pestle so it digests better.
Most large breed puppy foods are way to high in protein and fat for me to be comfortable with.
As for the correct answer, I think it really depends on what you want to do, you will find some do large breed puppy and some prefer all stages. You can find evidence to go either way. What I do rely on is breeders that I trust and respect have all told me that an all ages, high quality, grain free food is the way to go, or raw if possible (which for me is not as I have young kids around and the risk is not worth it to me).
Good luck with your puppy!

Welcome, my advice would be that if you got him from a breeder, contact that breeder for advice, if not then for me the key factor is to be aware that high protein levels are a bad idea.

Welcome!

Wellness Core is not appropriate for dogs under 12 months of age. I believe it says so on the bag. :)

I also prefer ALS grain free food. And I also feed Acana, but I rotate Grasslands, Pacifica, and Prarie Harvest. This particular food has levels that assure your puppy won't grow too fast; which is the usual reason for people recommending Large Breed Puppy formulas.
Champion pet foods products do have joint support in them, so I wouldn't worry about supplementing until your puppy is fully grown.
When I emailed them to say how pleased I was with Acana and asked for a coupon, they sent me a coupon for a free 30lb bag of Grasslands. I did not expect that! It was awesome!
