Overfeeding or Underfeeding 4 month old?

Hello Everybody! This is my first post! My husband and I are first-time parents to our CC, Hugo. He is 17 weeks and weighs 51 lbs, 21 inches long. He is very smart and learns very quickly. We have him in obedience classes and he is doing very well. Everything was going very well until about 3 weeks ago when he was 14 weeks.

He started this new thing where he would have night-time diarrhea. He would wake up every hour in the middle of the night and whine in his crate for us to take him outside. Once outside, he'd let out a runny stool. This would start around 12am to about 4am. However, his stools in the morning and during the day would be solid. But then the runny poops would happen again in the middle of the night. Besides the runny poop, his energy level is great, he's acting normal, he's not dehydrated, and he is not vomiting. There is also no blood/mucous in his stool.

At the time, he was on Blue Buffalo for Large Breed Puppies (Chicken & Rice). He was doing fine on it, but his stools weren't always solid. But this was the first time he was having night-time diarrhea. We were feeding Hugo about 1 1/2 cups 3 times a day. We tried cutting back on his food and limited his treats to almost none. We tried cutting back on his food to about 1 cup each feeding but he was still having the runs at night. Then we tried cutting back on his last meal and replaced it with rice and he had NO night-time diarrhea! But then when we gave him back his BB for his last meal, the night-time diarrhea came back.

We decided to "reset" his stomache, so we gave him a bland diet of rice/boiled hamburger/pumpkin/greek yogurt. His diarrhea cleared and he was having solid stools with no night-time potty breaks. We decided to change his diet to Diamond All-Stages (Beef & Sweet Potato). We slowly started to introduce Diamond to his bland diet. He was doing fine with Diamond mixed into his bland diet until we reached 1 cup each feeding, the diarrhea at night came back. We then decided to change his diet to TOTW Sierra Mountain. And again, we slowly introduced TOTW to his bland diet and when we reached 1 cup each feeding, the night-time diarrhea came back.

Is it possible that he has a sensitive stomache and can only handle less than 3 cups a day? Or is it the type of kibble? Should we try a different diet? I am just worried because I don't think 3 cups a day for a 51 pound 4 month old is enough. The guide on TOTW says he should be eating 6 cups a day. He has already lost weight because of his diarrhea episodes (his ribs are now showing :'( ) and I'm worried that he's not getting enough nutrients that he needs with less than 3 cups a day. He's looking very skinny and it makes me sad! However, I did read on a different forum that feeding less can actually help dogs gain weight since overfeeding causes diarrhea (which causes weight loss), what do you guys think? How many cups should a 4 month old be eating?

He's doing great otherwise! Has anyone experience this before and/or have any suggestions? Sorry this post is super long but we are losing our minds and our sleep, your help will be greatly appreciated!!

You can give him some Immodium. Second of all mastiffs are know to have issues with grain and chicken. Did you do a slow trans to the new food?

Yes, my husband did some research and found that chicken and grain isn't good for him. So we switched from BB Chicken & Rice to Diamond Beef & Sweet Potato. We did a slow transition to the new food mixed with his bland diet, increasing by 1/4 cup each of kibble each feeding every couple of days and decreasing the amount of his bland diet. But then when we reached 1 cup per feeding, he'd have the runs in the middle of the night.

Same thing happened when we switched to TOTW, he was doing fine with 1/4 cup increments per feeding with the bland diet, increasing every couple of days. Then once we reached 1 cup of the kibble per feeding, the night-time diarrhea came back. So far, he's only been good with about 3/4 cup, 3 times a day.

Right now we are feeding him 3/4 cup of TOTW mixed with rice and boiled hamburger, this routine seems to be going well for him: solid poops, no diarrhea. We want to feed him more kibble and stop the bland diet completely but it seems that any more kibble than 3/4 cup a feeding seems to upset his stomach. We've done a lot of trial an error these past couple weeks, this seems to work for now but we don't think he's being fed enough.

Maybe the formula you have him on is too rich

He was good on the bland diet. When we are increasing the kibble, we've been decreasing the bland as well. I think the kibble is more of the problem than the rice/hamburger. We might just have to keep trying different brands of kibble to see each which one works best for Hugo. I heard finding the perfect diet that works can be difficult!

I am sorry I meant the kibble sorry if I wasn't clear

Yeah, we've been trying expensive, high-quality brands, but nothing seems to be working so far. We'll see how TOTW goes for now. Do you have any suggestions for dog food that isn't too rich and works well for sensitive stomachs?

My girl Luna, is doing really good on the Simply Nourish adult chicken and turkey grain free formula. You can only find it at Petsmart as its their brand. It's a quality kibble and she loves it. She eats 4-5 cups daily and her stools are solid and she holds it at night. She is 12 weeks old.

That's great! I'd love to have Hugo on 4-6 cups of kibble a day but everything seems to upset his stomach. At 13/14 weeks he was having 4-5 cups a day as well, but then that's when the diarrhea started happening :(

Sully had at 10-11 weeks diareea that would come and go, mostly at night. Took a sample to his vet an turned out he had a case if hook worm. Once that cleared up he was fine, now packing on the pounds he's 33lbs now, was 17lbs at 10 weeks.

I can remember a time when Kryten had nighttime diarrhea and I think it might have been due to worms but I can't remember right now. The food I used for Kryten was Go! Shine and Sensitivity Salmon formula. It was the only fish based food that wasn't too rich for him when he was under a year old.

Generally a slow transition is:

Amount per feeding:

Day 1-4 ¾ cup of old food and ¼ cup of new food.

Day 5-9 ½ cup of old food and ½ cup of new food.

Day 10-14 ¾ cup of new food and ¼ cup of old food

Day 15 Start 100% of new food

Feeding the boiled hamburger and rice is to reset their digestive system after a major upset, i.e. a bout of diarrhea or a bout of throwing up.

Keep us posted on the pup.

How does he do if you feed bigger meals at breakfast and lunch, but then just a small 'snack' portion for dinner?

If you do back him off to the amount that gets him through the night without issues, does he still lose weight? Maybe that's all he needs?

The different brands will have different volume requirements for feeding, too, based on how much filler they use in the kibble.

You might also consider adding a probiotic or 1 or 2 tablespoons of 'live' yogurt with each meal, and see if that helps long-term.

Hello,

I am new to the forum. My girl is 15 weeks old today, and about 3 weeks ago we started experiencing diarrhea as well.
I thought she had eaten something, change of food, etc. after two trips to Vet it turned out to be a parasite. She is on a 10 day course of medication. She is much better, but I had been feeding her rice, chicken, and pumpkin purée. I did not know about chicken not being a good choice.

I was moving her to Merrick but will check out Earthbound.
