NC: Pit bulls, Rottweilers can be adopted at Guilford Shelter

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Guilford County Board of Commissioners has changed a longstanding rule and now breeds such as pit bulls and Rottweiler can adopted at the county animal shelter.

Local media outlets report the rule had been in effect for years while a nonprofit group ran the shelter. It was meant to limit liability by preventing adopting of breeds considered aggressive.

The county assumed operation of the shelter last summer. Director Logan Rustan says around 80 percent of the dogs at the shelter at any time are in part pit bull.

County deputy manager Clarence Grier says the rule runs counter to directions from the state Department of Agriculture.

Those recommendations say that if a dog has the right temperament, regardless of breed, the dog should have a chance to be adopted.
