Puppy food options

We just got a new puppy and I have gotten different advice and wanted to know what other mastiff owners used food wise for their puppy?

A high quality all stages dog food. I personally use a limited ingredient food since one of my dogs has a poultry allergy. Somewhere in the prior threads (probably on the health and nutritional care section) there should be a link to a great site that rates the dog foods out there so you can easily check the quality of the dog food before purchase. It actually took us awhile to find one that Diesel did well on because of his allergies.

I know a lot of people on here also feed raw and if you were interested in going that route could provide a lot of info.

You may want to browse the "health and nutritional care" section of the forum since there have been many discussions of raw and different types of food on there previously as well. :)

DogFoodAdvisor.com is the site Nik is probably talking about. They have some great information.

They also have a long running thread on big dog diet & nutrition with some interesting commentary: http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/forums/topic/large-and-giant-breed-puppy-nutrition/

The main thing is to make sure the calcium is 1.5% or less, and that phosphorus is balanced with calcium or a little less (~1.2-1.5%). Most big or giant formulas are on board with that these days.
I'd opt for a grain-free variety, but often they rely on pea or soy protein, which might not be the best, either. Read the ingredient list and make sure you like what you see.

Acana, Orijen, Now-Fresh, Fromm, Solid Gold and many others are good quality foods.

We fed Denna Solid Gold Wolf Cub until she was about 6 months old, then moved her to raw ("whole prey model raw"). I love feeding fresh food and having control over the ingredients in her dish, but it does take some planning and, in our case, an extra freezer. :)

My mastiff, Mr. Chev, eats the "For Health" brand of dog food kibble sold at Tractor Supply. His stool is quite normal now that he has matured (he is now 2 years old as of January). I avoid the chicken-based mixes, just because so many mastiffs show sensitivity to the poultry. I use "Lamb and Rice." Merry Christmas.
