Puppy Weight

I'm trying to plan ahead and get all ducks in a row for transportation of my new baby that'll come home in March.

Does anyone know the average weight of an 8wk old corso? My breeder said he never weighs them at that age only at their 6wk check up and that they tend to be 10-14lbs at 6wks.
I really want to road trip it for baby but my husband doesn't want to pay for that and would rather fly him home. I will only lap him in cabin and most airlines have a 20lb restriction so I'm worried!

TIA

I don’t know the average weight for 8week old Corso. I can just tell you my experience. The day my girl turned 8 weeks, she was 18lbs. The largest male of her litter was 23lbs. Good luck with the new little guy!

thanks :) I was hoping to gauge an average from other people's experiences. seems 16-25lbs is the going rate for an 8wk old CC :)

I'd call the breeder for your specific litter and puppy... the range is big, and could be close to that 20lb limit... how close do airlines check that if the puppy is in the carrier??

Oops, I see you did talk to the breeder...

Worst case - you puppy is 14lbs at 6wks, and gaining 1/2lb per day... that would put him at 21lbs at 8 wks... close enough to get past airplane personnel??

How long of a drive would it be versus the flight time? I would also consider that. Dennasmom is right about the airlines. If they are strict about their 20lbs limit, you would probably get in trouble with a 21lbs puppy. I wouldn‘t necessarily take that risk unless the drive was unreasonably long.

Oh, wow! I remember you mentioned the breeder doesn‘t weigh them, but could he make an exception in this case? I mean it‘s really not that hard, especially not at this age. A 20-hour will most likely be stressful for all of you. Are you planning an overnight stay? Either way, you‘ll have to take a lot of breaks. We took about 1-2 on a 3-hour drive back from the out of state breeder.

We only had a 3 hour drive and I think we stopped twice. She slept the whole time. She would have slept straight through but we stopped for potty breaks anyway. :)

Tyler,

i'm sure he will weigh baby if i want but a 2wk weight isn't going to do anything for me now... we plan to take a sprinter out there and allow us 5 days if needed, so yes we will overnight it :) I can plan a puppy flight pretty close to pick up but i'd really really like to drive out for the bonding time on the way back. I'm just trying to have a back up plan if for some reason i can't get my husband convinced to drive. he isn't thrilled with the $1500 the trip will most likley cost.

I totally understand. Good luck! This can certainly be a fun road trip.
