Man's best friend is costlier than ever. A red Tibetan mastiff named Big Splash, or Hong Dong in Chinese, was bought by a coal baron from the north of China for 10 million yuan (just over $1.5 million). The Tibetan Mastiff, also known as DoKhyi, is an ancient breed and a type of domestic dog originating with nomadic cultures in Central Asia. "When I started in this business, ten years ago, I never thought we would see such a price," Mr. Lu of the Tibetan Mastiff Garden in Laoshan, told The Telegraph. (ChinaFotoPress/Getty Images)

I've got an acquaintance who's Tibetan by birth, and he knows these dogs and what they're capable of. He told me they're bred not just to guard from people and other dogs, but also to fight (and win) against a marauding tiger. They're apparently the ultimate guard dog over there. Don't know that I'd pay $1.5 mil, but still, that's quite a dog!

I don't think he is worth that much...sure, he's a beauty to behold
definitely...simply magnificent, but waaaaay over priced. The purchase price was just pocket change to the buyer.
