Restitution for Rosie

Rosie was a large newfoundland who got out of her yard. The Des Moines police didn't know how to handle her, or what to do, so they shot & killed her. The city of Des Moines was ordered to pay the family $50,000.00 in damages. It's a long sound bite & I couldn't listen to the whole thing. From what I heard, those cops were a$$holes.

If this is the case I think it is (I can't listen to the bite right now), yes, they were. IIRR she was cowering in a neighbor's bushes, and continually tried to run away from the cops and they kept shooting her.

She started out standing ON HER OWN DRIVEWAY, barking @ the police car. One of the cops said "Yeah, he lives here. I can tell." or something like that. Then they couldn't figure out how to use the catch pole, so they used their tazer. One of the cops said his fur is too thick, but I think I got one post because he ran away howling. I think that's when Rosie started to hide in the bushes. As soon as I heard one cop say, "I'll just shoot him." I stopped listening. WTH! TRAIN YOUR OFFICERS!!! At least the courts recognized the fact that these cops were totally in the wrong.

The cops need an asskicking and firing and jail time. Maybe drawn and quarted after 10 years in jail, and... and .... OH Just let me have them.

OMG! after they shot her an officer said "nice!". wtf! i feel sick to my stomach now. I am full of anger and sadness. If that happened to my dog I don't even want to know how I would react.

The best dog I ever owned was a Newfoundland. We had to have a "hot fence" around our garden to keep the deer out and Jake would go thru the wires without any bother. Cops do have a dangerious job but should not stop them from having commen sense. Whatever punishment they got was not enough.

NELA I agree that there are times when the adrenalin is running hot for police officers, and they don't really have a lot of time to assess a dog's behavior. In cases like that, it's a tragedy when a dog comes running up wagging its tail & gets shot. But I understand why/how it happened. This was not the case. These two guys just didn't have the knowlege or training to handle a large strange dog. Or they were just being jerks. Either way the judgement against them was a landmark decision. I'm glad the family won the suit, even if it won't bring Rosie back.

Not to mention it was a Newfie. I'm sure there are aggressive Newfs out there, but who doesn't know that Newfoundlands are really friendly, save strangers from drowning kind of dogs? I've certainly never met a Newf that wanted to do more than lean on you until you fall down.

Let me tell you about Baltimore City. First my wife was working from home and spotted a little dog sniffing at a trash can. As a postal worker walked buy the dog growed at the postal officer. Just to defend the food in the trash. My wife watched the whole thing. Next thing you know cops with rifles are storming up and down the street. My wife runs out side and yells at the cops. They tell her to go inside . She tell them the story. The cop says . How much does your house cost? We shoot dogs in this neighbor hood. She dials 911 and demands a supervisor and the whole things goes stupid. The dog by the way was long gone.

A year later I left my gate open and my dogs got out. Some one call te police. The dogs went into and out of my yard . But the police did not bother to close the gate. Instead they used yellow tape and closed the street. Then as one officer went to open a car door the 6 month old lab ran to get in the car. The officer pulled its gun and fired five shots into my driveway striking the lab once. The other bullets went into my garage.

When I came home the neighbors told me the story. I had to rush down to animal control and pay 600 dollars in cash. Theft if you ask me to get the dogs. Then rush the lab to the ER 1600 dollars there . He is fine.

I called the police and told them what I thought of there performance. I then received 1500 dollars I fines.
I won't call the police again. Period. They don't help.

This is very unfortunate and sad. Being a peace officer myself, it makes me angry. I recently responded to a house where the guy has a very pretty looking EM, a Saint Bernard, a Pit Bull, and an American Bulldog. Now, I know all of those breeds are protective, so I didn't exit my vehicle. I got on the loud speaker and called the resident out. As soon as he greeted me and shook my hand, all four dogs wanted me to pet them. There is always a way to deal with these situations, and being a Neo owner myself, I try and educate as many other officers as I can.

There need to be more folks like you in the force, then! :)
