Serious question about the boerboel

Since the origin of the Boerboel is not entirely known, should a boerboel be able to pass a DNA test???? Stay tuned...there is an unbelievable story and a possible appology coming!

Boerboel International has a DNA facility that has mapped the DNA markers for the Boerboel. It is called the Biggs DNA test. If you hurry you can have it done at a discount. I believe until the end of December.

Deep breath......Dallas has become increasingly agressive, I called the breeder and he says he's getting complaints from almost all the owners of the girls from this litter. The dad is very well documented, he appears on registries. But the mom is not....Dallas recently had to be rehomed because I'm going through a divorce. The new owners called with difficulties, but they live really far away so I had to talk them through things over the phone. I thought we were making progress and maybe they expected too much too soon from a dog that is distrusting of strangers. They decided to get her tested....SHE FAILED THE DNA TEST FOR BOERBOELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am beyond pissed!!!!!

I am seriously looking back and questioning...if certain colors are recognized, how exactly do you go about getting a new color???? You have to mix it with SOMETHING, but what??? I don't know that I believe there are real...true boerboels! I think they have a mastiffs size and characteristics, but they were mixed with something to get the desired color. In this case, these dogs appear to be very unstable on the female side. All of the girls and their mother are more than protective, they are agressive to dogs they don't even know. I have never been so mad in my life. I feel bad for defending black boerboels.

I do think the circumstances played a role in all of this. She has never bit at any of my immediate family members...She always did well with people I introduced her to in person. Maybe they did something? Maybe they tried too hard, too fast???

rshawn, i can't tell you how cautious I would be about getting one at this point. AKC doesn't recognize the black boerboel and there is a lot of controversy over them in the smaller associations that do or do not recognize them. PLease educate yourself and make sure you know what you're bringing into your home!!!

So there maybe be some fushing things going on with cross breeding. Do you know what she was mixed with ?

That's the thing...I have no idea because I was told she was pure. I'm not sure if the test tells what breeds are present or just says if it's not a boerboel or not.

It is as I have been telling everyone. The black Boerboel is a fairytale, this is why I call them Unicorns. I know people that have been around the Boerboel since they were rescued as a breed. 1983/84, they tell me that every black dog that was presented to them did not fit the profile of a boerboel in either appearance or temperament, and of the 72 original founding dogs that were chosen not one of them were black or had black ancestors.

Black Boerboels of today originated from 3 dogs, Pet Shop Jim (note the pet shop name), Muller Lady, and Muller Poppy. The pedigree of all 3 of these dogs is in question and totally broken and full of lies. My new pup Ryder is the closest thing you will ever see when it comes to a Black Boerboel. Even Mizpah Black was not as dark as this pup.

Now Mizpah Wokkel Bokkies was pretty close though.

Lucas Van de Merwe the #3 founding member of the SABT (the one that started it all) loved his "Black" Boerboels. He called them black but they were Ultra Brindles like my Odi, Ryder and Lucky. There are as fare as I know no true black boerboels.
Now for the twist. All of our mastiff dogs can be traced back to the Cynomones and Hyrcanian dogs. These dogs were said to be giants and well suited for hunting Lions and Tigers and they were said to be "dogs of a Dark Color". There are 2 ways to perceive this, 1 they were black dogs or 2, they were dark or ultra brindle. If they were black then any mastiff today could throw a random black puppy. But the DNA today says the Boerboel does not carry the dominant black gene.
One last thing.
Proof that breeders crossed breeds to get black dogs.

Danes, Neos, Cane Corso, Black Labs are all said to be used in the crossing to achieve a black coated Boerboel.

I am so sorry you are going through this and I do not fault you at all. You were misled and it is no fault of yours. I just did not want to bash on anyone here and hurt their feelings so I did not push the issue. And what you have experienced is exactly why it is wrong to cross the boerboel with something else. Can you get Dallas back and find a suitable home? Even aggressive dogs can be rehabilitated and put to good use.

Agreed, she was dropped off at a shelter. I am working with the shelter now to fill in the blanks of her history. I went and showed them how she immediately calmed down. So, she's not crazy, she's loyal and distrusting of others and probably should be in a one dog home as well. They were all super interested as they hadn't heard of the breed and I taught them what I knew and suggested they read more on them. I'll continue to work with them because I had to move in with a roomate because of my divorce situation. My wife is no alpha and has to small children at home so I don't feel comfortable with Dallas staying home with her now that I have to admit I have absolutely no clue what she is.

My wife has experienced episodes of Dallas growling and challenging her while I'm away. That's not good and I fear it will escalate, esp with me not being home anymore.

I agree, a...THE suitable home is what's best for her, but they have a group working on this and it sounds very promissing. I'm at a point where I can breath a little easier because they really do understand at this point. she's not even in general population at the shelter. They are working hard to keep her calm, she only gets handled by the same few staff that she has taken to. Unless something changes I believe they have a good process in place.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.
I hope you are able to find a home she fits into.
Depending on her behaviour, there are people out there who can safely and happily handle a more aggressive dog.
As you say yourself, it is difficult at a distance to say whether the problem is actually with the dog - or with the new owners' handling and expectations of her.
Boerboels generally are not "one man dogs" - being happy to fit in with other family members.
It may be that in a different 1 on 1 domestic situation the dog will do fine; as long as the owner is experienced and goes in "eyes open".

I think all you can do now is what you are doing - give people the benefit of your experience with the dog so that their expectations are accurate and realistic.

Fingers crossed and good luck.

Good luck with it all.

J it seems like Mike's suggestion is a good one. What would concern me most is that Dallas is at risk for ending up in the sick hands of dog fighters. The experienced owners on the Facebook site could contact and work with the shelter.
