I know I do not have EMs but out of all four breeders I would stay away from Rockport Mastiffs bc from there website they do not health test.
Best of luck finding your puppy, can't wait to see photos

You're going to be in the show "zone" this weekend. I'm sure you'll get to speak to several show people who should be able to point you in the right direction.

I have talked to rockport when I was looking (in the early stages of looking) and they were very rude to me. Called me a puppymill and was quite combative. I didn't ask about breeding, I asked about showing rights and at that point, I just wanted to not have to spay/neuter until after showing. Personally, I find their dogs do not look like a Mastiff. I also find fortress mastiffs to have very poor looking mastiffs (that is me being nice). Beowulf has very good lines and the breeder is very nice but she has very (and I mean very) strong opinions. I think she is great but I know that she has rubbed some people the wrong way. Still, her dogs are top quality so I would recommend either Beowulf or Goldleaf. I haven't talked to the people at Goldleaf but I like the looks of their dogs. I find Canada does not have a good showing of mastiffs (Actually if you talk to Beowulf, she will tell you the same thing). She can actually come up and finish a dog in a weekend (two tops) because the dogs up here are not proper conformation. Seems like a lot of breeders have gone for the excess bone and wrinkles and they are producing dogs that look like Neos.

Correct, if they are health tested website will show ofa or pennhip results as well as some more usually, cardiac, cnr negative etc.. I would look at results of sire/dam and pedigree as well. That being said, I love st patricks mastiffs and would really love to have a boy from cactus jake and they seem like a great breeder but they do no "invasive" testing as stated in their website which I do not agree with.

Regardless of which breeder you choose if I were you I would require:

Vet checks of the sire & dam
Pretesting for PRA, Cystinuria and hips
Records from their vet for all vaccinations & worming of the pups
Access to their vet by your vet to verify and discuss medical history.

Health guarantee does not mean pretesting, it means "I am gambling that nothing goes wrong in the first year or two"

Larger EM's do not always equal the healthiest EM's, in fact their life span could be shortened if not cared for properly and if they have issues as seniors you will have an even more difficult time managing them.

I talk with a breeder months in advance, visit the dogs that were bred often during pregnancy. Ask a load of questions, health, personality, feeding, care, medical history, etc. If a breeder keeps their dogs caged, I'm gone. If they do not allow visits and an open dialogue, I'm gone. There are no stupid questions when adopting a pup. Everything you do prior to receiving it should be geared to giving it the best start possible.

Just bc they have a guarantee doesn't mean that they test themselves.
You really would to have seen them done the testing on there dogs themselves
OFA or PennHip for the hips
    - OFA excellent, good / fair really question especially if both dogs are fair.
    - PennHip, look at #s EX .23/.25 this would put a dog depending on breed in 90% to 80% for there breed

    OFA for elbows
    Same as hip scores above

Hope this makes a little sense.

IF you are going to the shows and will be around some great breeders who have and are breeding/showing champions...that is the best thing to do. But be ready for some possible cattiness between some breeders as they are VERY competitive and think that they develop the best EM's!! (I like the competitiveness though!) I talked to about 4-5 great breeders in my area and after talking to them all, including the owner of the sire (CH), I decided on a breeder and pup and haven't looked back since! :D I will say that excellent pedigree, health records, CH lines all come at a price, so IMO with EM's you get what you pay for at this level. What Geisthexe said for OFA is what you want...and IMO bigger/Giant boned EM doesn't mean better...balanced is the key. Look at most CH EM's and you will see this most of the time (Beowolf and Goldleaf look great). Good luck, I hope you find the best pup! You

I can kind of speak to Rockport. My dog came from a breeder who go his dogs from Rockport so I guess he is a proxy Rockport dog. The owner of Rockport does not health test, not because he is trying to hide anything, but he doesnt believe in it as he says it gives some dogs who are pets an unfair shake. At least thats how it was described to me. My guy for example is CMR1 affected because my breeder did do all the health testing. Am I worried about it, no. But a lot of people would pass him over just because of the small chance that something COULD develop. You should ask him about it though as he will explain why he doesn't do it. He has been breeding for decades so its not like he is new to the game and the people I have talked to who have dogs from him are all very happy owners.

I got my guy from Kingman Mastiffs just outside Edmonton. He is a new breeder who has only had one or two litters so far. His name is Dave Owen and I cant say how happy I have been with him, he was careful and asked lots of questions before he agreed to sell me a puppy and once he did he has been there every step of the way, great communication and very informative. And the guy LOVES to talk dog, I have had many conversations that went into the 2 hour range just talking about the dogs. I don't know if he is gonna be planning anything next winter or early next year but it doesnt hurt to ask him. www.kingmanmastiffs.com

Wow thank all of you guys so much for giving me advice i never knew what health testing was and how important it is when purchasing a pup until i came here you guys are amazing. .. Even thoe i did everything wrong when i brought my daphne home ans the problems she has i still wouldnt trade her for anything in the world. ..but this time i want to do everything right do my research and find the right breeder and perfect pup for me and my breeder and if that means spending thousands to do it then thats what i plan on doing. ....i have become obsesses with this breed and even thoe bigger iant always better i would still atleast like to have the big head and jowels with the wrinkles im a little obsesses with that to but i will also make sure he is how quality incase i ever decide i want to try showing here and there as far as breeding ill leave that to the prof unless his breeder ever needs him for a stud if not i do plan on getting him nuetered when he is fully grown

I also think guarantees are kind of funny...I mean, even if my guy had something wrong, its not like I'm going to GIVE him back! Lol NO way. Even the best breeder can't "guarantee" that your dog will have no issues, its only a guideline that says there is LESS likely hood that your pup will have issues. Either way, I think all breeders should HAVE all the health checks done, because it keeps bad genes out of the line, even if they are just pets/companions.

I also personally love big heads on EM and wrinkly faces...:D My little guy has a wrinkly face compared to his brindle brother and I'm sure when he is full grown, he'll have a big ole pumpkin head! :D

I am actually looking out of country for my male. This is one of the breeders that I am looking at. Click on the picture of Bozo with his handler. Love this dog and several others of this breeder. http://www.mastiff.com.br/site_ingles/galeria_pedigree_machos/eng_bozo.html. The other breeder I am looking at is in Czech. There is also one in Australia and two in England.

And yea, to me a mastiff isn't a MASTIFF if he doesn't have proper bone and a BUCKET HEAD..
