  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Summer projects (DIY or not)

Egads. I'm not sure I want to add it up. o_O

We got expensive appliances because we're saving so much by doing everything else. And because we go so slow that we can just buy one nice thing at a time. The cabinets will all be cherry with an arts and crafts look.

I think the range was $6000
Hood might have been $1700
Giant Sub-Zero fridge: $17,000-ish.
Dishwasher: $2700
The sink was also around $2700. It's awesome. And I think the faucet was $800.
Counter tops were maybe $5000. Just for the red Quartz. I made the striped wood top for the peninsula.

We had all the floors replaced with 4" quarter-sawn oak. So the kitchen and dining room floors were $8000. We did all the tiled inlays and the tiled back splash. I did all the wood trim. I'm also doing all the cabinetry.

I have a friend that had her kitchen redone. They paid like $60,000 14 years ago and it's not as awesome as ours. :p

fridge (already have it) 900
dishwasher 300-500
floors ~400
cabinets (don't know) ~ 2000?
maybe also a cheapy island ~200-300
counter tops (not sure) ~<1k
faucet ~ 200
recessed lighting (don't know cost)

You can do a lot with $10,000. Just stay away from the giant refrigerators. o_O

This is fun.

Here is the bathroom on the first floor. It used to be a tiny rectangle with a door that opened into the kitchen. We took the closet space from under the stairs and made an 'L' shape. We moved the toilet to the short part of the 'L' under the stairs and put the door on the other side. The counter is a big slab of curly maple with an epoxy coating.

so this mini room is below the staircase by the kitchen?

I don't even have enough food in my normal sized fridge to even think about upgrading to anything insane!!!! See...I'm just an ordinary home owner.

The wall with the sink is shared with the fridge side of the kitchen. We took out all the walls on the first floor so it's open. We used to hate the first floor because it was all divided up in to small rooms and the heat was horrible. The house has forced air but you couldn't keep the first floor warm without making the second floor a million degrees.

We put a 3 sided gas fireplace between the dining room and the living room. It keeps things nice and toasty in the winter.

They look good. Soft close drawers are nice. It looks like they build them to the sizes you specify? That's like custom.
I considered ordering the doors and drawer fronts for my cabinets because, sadly, it's cheaper for me to buy them than to make them.

Right now, I just have a bunch of plywood boxes with drawers that have no pretty fronts.

I haven't really looked at that site, but will have to study it when I'm getting close to redoing the kitchen. My bf found the site and so I had it saved.

I'm still in awe of your kitchen prices lol.

Well, if it makes you feel better, we had no floors for years. We spent a lot of time in our 'temporary' kitchen. It's a lot easier to get nicer fixtures when you only buy one thing per year.

Also, we have no baseboards yet. :p

I'm drooling over the appliances too lol. I'm perfectly happy with my less than $700 stove, and the fridge that was here when we moved in is pretty new......but yah, if I had the money to do what I wanted my appliances would look like that. I'd take a fridge like that for just hte two of us and the dogs, thats the one with what is basically a full size freezer built in right?

No it doesn't make me feel any less in awe of your kitchen lol, but I understand how it feels to have reno projects that never are quite finished and you're kind of isolated from that space - it does suck.

Is that a farmhouse sink? I'd love to have a copper one in my kitchen but they are quite pricey even with a discount.

Yes. It's a Shaw's fireclay something or other.

We weren't really looking for Sub-Zero refrigerators because I don't think they are as reliable as they should be for the price. The Pro 48 is just so cool. It looks different from just about all the other refrigerators on the market. For the first week or so we made an effort to keep the shelves organized because of the glass door. Now we just don't care. I use the bottom drawer to store all the meat for the dogs so that's nice.
