to crop or not to crop

Me and my wife are still having this discussion.
Our 9 week old Corso's ears are folding nicely.
We're leaning towards leaving them alone.

I really like the cropped look on Neos as well as Corsi. Our EM has natural ears, of course. In the past we kept GDs and IWHs. All of our Danes were cropped. Given the length of the crop on a Dane, it was a MUCH bigger 'production number' than for Corsi or Neo's. The ears had to be posted and taped for quite some time, to get them to stand. But we never had any complications, and although our puppies were not keen on standing still for re-taping, they otherwise did not seem very bothered. If we get another Dane -- or a Corso or Neo -- in the future, they will be cropped, as well.

My neo has a problem with one of his ears. He has an extra piece of cartlidge there which causes it to fould outward. Its kinda funny looking because it almost sticks straight out where the other ear is folding nicely. I posted a thread in the health section but didn't get many replies. I was hoping taping could correct that problem but im not sure??

Will she have her ears already done by the breeder or will you have to set that up? There is this fantastic Dr. In London Ontario named Dr. Staples. He is supposed to be one of the best and he gets crops from all over the country and US. His prices are very reasonable too. I think he only charges around $250 for ear crop and you basically drop them off in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon.

Im having them done in a few weeks. There is a vet here in my area that has been recommended by several other vets that is going to do it. I guess he does most of them in our area. So we are going to go see him for that procedure and its only $300 not concerned with the cost as much as the outcome. I think he wanted to do them around 10 weeks he said

Hi, It is true that each owner decides for its own. When I had a Doberman before it had to have its ears cropped by the standard, so we went ahead and did it. It definitely hurt for him and then itched when they healed and from happy puppy he turned to this sad little thing for a while, at the end he was fine and had long happy life. Now I have a 6 month Cane and I am not cropping her ears, she is perfect just the way she is. :)

well said. it truly is a personal choice you make. things to consider are , why am i wanting this done, does this action cause further health risks. for example , me and my wife had or pits ears done for appearance . it makes it easier for my wife to go out in the evening walking alone. folks didn't want to approach her anymore. ear job did the trick. our current neo / bullmastiff didn't get the ear job. seriously, her head and body have developed in a way that would have made an ear job look wicked. momma didn't feel up to it this time around so i let it go. the other day my wife was folding chloes ears up like she had them cropped, and my wife says," dang she would have looked evil". my responce was to stand there blinking. She looks at me and says , well babe our next pup we'll have to get it done. our next pup is going to be a bangogge 3/4 blue neo 1/4 bullmastiff. So as you can see even in a pro-cropping house things can change. opinions differ, and for sure there is no magic answer that settles the issue once and for all. my feeling in this matter is , do what you feel , just make sure your vet crops worth a crap, and bring them a pic of what u want done, if u decide to crop.

oh yes , i forgot chloe was 5 months old in the pic u see. looks like a weird boxer. she has thickened up and grown some floppier mouth curtains. dang she looks goofy in that pic. her head was small, but damn if it didn't just keep on growing
