Tripe

I have been feeding raw for over one year. During that time most everything that I have read said that tripe was nutritionally, the perfect food for our dogs. Recently, I have seen a couple of discussion that says this is not true. I'm just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this? Pro, con or neutral.

I do know it is like crack to my dogs. Also, how often do you feed it? I can only afford to feed it once or twice a week but when I get it out, their big ol butts start a wagging and the drool factory is pumping on overtime.

My dogs have been *back* on raw for the last 6 + weeks now - they are eating chicken quarters, half chickens & pork shoulder no problem. Recently introduce chicken liver & only 1 will eat it. Ive not tried green tripe YET but have heard its nutrionish (is that a word, lol) for them. So far Ive only been able to find bleached tripe BOO so my search continues.

I found this online from the site I linked below: "I am sure you are thinking, "... what is Green Tripe & why devote a whole page to it?" The answer to that is simple, because it is the best, most natural food you could feed your K9 friend. It has been a well-known secret of top breeders/kennels of performance dogs for years. "

" So how can something so disgusting, be so good? These same gastric juices & enzymes not only aid the animal in digestion, but also aid the dog in digesting & efficiently utilizing his food. The amino acids are necessary for muscular development &, the other gastric juices, I believe, are the best cleaner for their teeth "

Tripe is lower in protein and phos that other red muscle meat and does not contain any nutrients that you do not get from other muscle/organ meat, so while it is nutritious, I would feed it as an addition not as a main component of a meal or diet. Or if you find it too distasteful skip it, I don't think it adds anything to a well balanced raw diet. (other than supreme enjoyment from most dogs :) )

I will disagree with the "gastric juices and amino acid" line. Every body (dog or human) break down food into their amino acids (basically what digestion is), you don't need anything from an outside source to help your body do that and all muscle has it. Also gastric juices for ruminating animals are different from a carnivores, which have a very low pH in comparison to break down proteins in meat. Therefore your dog doesn't need the gastric juices of a cow.

I feed it when we butcher a cow (I don't waste what we have), but I never buy any extra personally.

I use it as a suplement 2/3 times a week, not sure if it makes a difference or not but they certainly love it.

Yeah, Tripe is really very good supplement for dogs as it contains no. of nutrients such as Omega 3 fatty acids, Omega 6 fatty acids, enzymes, phytonutrients and probiotics.

IDK about it being perfect and complete on it's own, but I'm a fan of tripe. Unfortunately, I can only get canned. I feed 1/2 a can at least every other day. It's gives me something to mix his supplements in and keeps him "regular."

To get green tripe, you either have to get it canned, from the slaughterhouse directly, from a farm that does its own slaughtering or from someone who sells raw for animal foods. Its not legal to sell it in places that sell for human consumption. At least in the US.

Tripe should absolutely be included in every raw fed dog's diet! It is chock full of digestive enzymes which besides aiding in digestion, purifies and cleanses the blood and removes toxins, parasites and fungus. They also improve metabolism, hormonal function and boost the immune system. Green tripe is also loaded with natural probiotics which promotes a healthy balance of microflora in the stomach. Tripe is perfectly balanced at a ratio of 1:1 Calcium:phosphorus and contains the essential fatty acids, Linoleic and Linolenic.
