Wants to "play rough" while walking

Wants to "play rough" while walking

I rescued Mack about 5 months ago and he’s approximately a year old now. The first few weeks and even months that I had him he was relatively timid. Then he progressively became more active and the puppy behavior started. I invested in an easy walker harness so that walks were more enjoyable and we seem to be mastering the pulling on the leash issue. However, about halfway through our hour walk in the evening he wants to play with me. He jumps on me, bites my hands, arms and legs and it sometimes takes me 20 minutes to get him to calmly walk with me again. I’ve tried making him sit, firmly grabbing the back of his neck, saying “noâ€, and ignoring him. If I ignore him he jumps on my back. He weighs more than me right now at 145 and I imagine he will be getting bigger and stronger. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to gain control of these situations so we can get back to our peaceful evening walks? Thanks!

You could try to redirect him by quickly turning in the opposite direction & walking quickly, not acknowledging his behavior. It takes a long time but they eventually get it. Or you could try to use a prong collar, although I hate those things. Someone with more experience might chime in with a better idea.

I prefer martingale collars over prong or choke chains. I agree with the redirect by walking the opposite direction. It's going to take some work and time but definitely something you should start sooner rather than later.
