Weight pulling & carting

Does anybody have any tips for getting started in either weight pulling or carting? I'm looking to see if there is anything locally but haven't been able to find anyone yet. I'm looking for training tips and or online resources. Thank you.

Have fun! I'm not much help for resources I'm afraid, Geisthexe might though. We went through IWPA which is USA only I believe.

Deb does, but she won't be on this weekend since she is having a weight pull at her house all weekend. I'm sure she will see this when she gets back as and give you lots of tips!

Re: Weight pulling & carting

I'm planning on getting Denna into this, just from a fun/amateur standpoint, not competition level. We have a garden cart I think I can outfit correctly for a harness. Then, I'll need to buy or make a good pulling harness for her. Start her out just getting used to having something following her around... then start adding some weight. She's almost one year old now, so well beyond the age when many puppies start. I just have to get ME in gear... Someone posted some good videos of initial pulls - where the cart was on tracks and held back so it's wouldn't run up and give the dog a 'flat tire' when the dog stopped.

If you're just going to pull a cart around the yard get a proper CARTING harness rather than a weight pull harness, and make sure she's attached to the cart by side bars as well as the traces, that way when she stops the cart stops and doesn't run up on her legs.

I live in Lethbridge, Alberta. Thank you. I've seen it on tv but have no idea how to get started. I don't know if I'd want to compete, that would all depend on how Kryten likes it but I do want to find something to do with him since I don't think he would do good in agility, which is what I do with Jiggers.

Re: Weight pulling & carting

It turns out that the couple that own the boarding kennel I use do carting with their Bernese and I was able to get a lesson in the basics today. Her largest harness just fit Kryten, read very snug, and therefore we were able to actually connect him to a cart to see his reaction. He LOVES it. There were a couple of moments when he turned sharply and the shafts hit his hips that he freaked out but after calming down and getting going he was back to trotting down the lane making me jog along side him. Now I just need to get &/or make some equipment.
