I have an 8 month 90lb energetic cane coso. I read too much exercise or long walks could be bad for his joints. when he is not walked he runs around the house like a mad man. what is appropriate exercises and walking distance without damaging his joints?

IMO, walking an 8 month old pup for about 30 mins to an hour is ok. Jumping is not recommended, if at all possible to stop the jumping. Stairs should be avoided, if possible. If they have to manuver stairs, have them on leash and take it slow. Going down is the hardest on the pup at a young age.

To stop the jumping, teach the pup off and then to a sit. Has the pup had OB training, either with you or training class?

Limiting exercise should remain in effect until about a year old.

He's running like a mad man because he hasn't had enough exercise. You can also do mental stimulation which will help tire him out. Play hide and seek with you and objects, give him a kong with a treat or ice cube with treat in the middle. Give him tasks to stimulate his thinking. Mental stimulation and physical exercise will tire the pup out.

Hope that helps. I'm sure others will pipe in.

Let me add, if it is hot weather, it's not good to walk a mastiff especially, more than 30 minutes. Titan will only walk 10-15 minutes in hot weather. When Titan is done, he will stop and turn around.

Mastiffs tend to overheat rather quickly. I use a wet, almost frozen towel to put on Titan in the summer after our walk to cool him down and he has his own fan.

Thanks that was helpful and yes he knows his basic command. Im currently training him, he is a very smart dog. The only problem is once a visitor come over or we go to the pet store he gets very excited and it takes him awhile to respond to his commands even with a slip collar or prong. Collar. he will act this way even after a two mile walk , which made me wonder if I should walk him more, change my training techniques or wait and see he he grows out of it

You might try clicker/positive reinforcement training with really, really high value treats and see if that works better than collar snaps (those may be seen as an annoyance instead of motivation, these are strong-willed dogs!).

Denna and I have worked from day one that she must 'sit' and 'wait' to greet strangers (dogs and humans). Always keeping it positive - and now she's pretty calm around people (she just turned one in March), and will sit patiently for them. Meeting other dogs is definitely harder (her daycare visits probably have not helped), but if I'm persistent, she'll sit and wait before greeting (we had to work at it yesterday when the other dog was a happy lab puppy). :)
