Just curious what your favourite tricks or commands you have taught your puppy ? I am looking for some ideas that I can pass on to Jenny...my EM !

Thanks

"Leave it" and "Drop" are the two I use the most. "Leave it" is very helpful when you are outside somewhere and doggie wants to go pick up some nasty old food that fell on a sidewalk or something. I can't say that Topaz pays attention to me all the time when I say it, but in general she does very well. And "Drop" is very nice so I don't have to shove my hand in her mouth to get what I want out. ;) She is very good with this one.

Tricks, hmmmm... The neighborhood kids love Aurora's "bang" trick. When they make a finger gun and say bang she lies down and plays dead, that is usually followed by roll over. They will get her to do it over and over. My most useful command with her is "front" where she comes from where ever she is and sits in front of me making eye contact, giving me full focus. Is the best for off leash situations. If I want/need her to focus only on me or get out of a situation quickly that is my command. All of my dogs have OUT down pat as well, that is probably our first clear command.
Cribs is still young, so her commands are still limited. I guess Au Pied is the one we use the most, is a multi-usage command.
Meaning come, focus heel, etc... If she is at a distance it means come and end in place, if we are walking it means focus heel which is coming along, well as much focus as a 5 month old can have.
I personally like her Aller command , which is to jump an object with no touching. So far she has only done a foot - 2 feet but LOVES jumping!
Most important I guess is down and stay for all of them as well.
Joe Boxer doesn't like tricks, except when I ask him to dance with my arms out he stands up and holds my hands and we dance. He is smooth :)

Ben seems to demonstrate a massive grasp of "go deaf when it suits you".

Funny, Jenny seems to have that command down pat as well !!!! haha

What is the best way to teach "FRONT" ? I have tried getting jenny to make eye contact and it doesnt seem to be sticking with her !

Thats what I need to work on the most, is getting her to stop what shes doing and come straight to me ! @ 4 mnths old.... I am probably asking alot of Jenny ! haha

My Rotty was trained to do a recall and I used "front" to make sure he stopped right in fromt of me. Hold some dried liver in your hand and make a fist with it at about the dog's nose level in front of you. So I would do the "come" command, outstreching my arms and as the dog got closer I would clasp my hands into a double handed fist in front of meand he would run straight to my fist and nose it, watching and waiting for my "heel" command (where he would walk around my right side behind my back and sit at my left. Start off doing this with the dog about a metre away and then work to furthe distances. Or you can do it on lead, making the dog sit, then you walk around to the dog'sfront with your fist in front and say "front". They are not actually doiing anything but they learn that if you have a fiust and they pay full attension, sometimes that fist opens and gives them a treat! Then when they see you make that fist in the middle of a recall, they will run straight to it.

I use "place" when I want her on my left side, for that I started simple. I would hold a treat in my fist so she can smell it, say "place" and then move my hand from right to left behind my back so she ended on my left side, same as above. Once she was in place I raised my fist so that she was looking, once there was eye contact she got a "good girl" and her treat. It didn't take that long for her to understand what I was asking. For "front" it is roughly the same thing at the beginning, I start with her on a leash say the command and lead her to where I want her with the treat, which is directly in front of me, once there is eye contact again she gets the treat. After she knows where she should be for the command front, I started moving farther away (she was on a 20 foot lead). I would put her in a down stay, then use the au pied and front commands. She is only 5 months, so is still a work in progress and at this point we only train when set up for success. If she is wrestling with her buddies, I won't attempt it, as I know she is too distracted and I want only success at this time.
At 4 months I say only do brief 10-15 minutes max a few times a day and make it the BEST part of her day! You want training to be soooooo much fun!

"aupeid" ..... ? hahah

Those are some really good tips !!! I get so excited to train her. I dream of the day when all I have to do is make a motion with my hand to get her to do her tricks.

Speaking of.... do any of you use hand commands over voice ?

There will be a point at which only hand commands will work or vice versa (using only voice) but only after they have really learned the command. Until then your best success will be to use both. I had my rotty in agility and at a point where I could stand at the start line and just call out "tunnel...tyre...over..." etc. and when doing obedience I would practice with and without voice to make sure he was always watching. As Cody said, keep training short and interesting for them and always finish with something easy that you know they will do so you always finish on a positive note and can make a big fuss of them.

Au pied is french for "at foot" is the direct translation.
We are planning on doing French Ring with her, so all her commands are in French. After having her for 2.5 months all our dogs are now bilingual :D
I do hand signals while doing the verbal from the get go. Again our dogs are trained in both, so they respond to both.
Ya, Crib's favorite thing is jumping so we always end on the jump, that way she is always happy.
