Young dog buried alive in grave

A young bull mastiff is fighting for its life after being found buried alive in a shallow grave in Kuils River.

A passerby made the horrific discovery on Thursday afternoon while walking across an field in Summer Heights.

Cape of Good Hope SPCA spokeswoman, Sarah Scarth, said the man heard "strange sounds" and went to inspect.

"He saw a part of the head sticking out of the grave. He phoned the SPCA and one of inspectors got there about 15 minutes later and dug him out."

Lazarus, as he is now known, was in a "horrendous" condition, said Scarth.

His back was covered with open sores, and the inspector who rescued him said the dog seemed paralysed. However, Scarth said this paralysis did not seem permanent.

Lazarus's age could not be determined, but he is a young adult.

Scarth said it appeared Lazarus had been placed in the grave overnight.

"It's the first time we've seen something like this.

"There were already maggots in his open wounds. He was in so much pain, and he wasn't the least bit aggressive."

He is receiving treatment but remained very weak.

It is estimated Lazarus's medical bills could total R3 000. The SPCA can be contacted on 021 700 4150.

Poor baby. Whoever did that to him deserves the same treatment. I'd be happy to bury the human while it's still alive.
