How much food

i would tell you what i would do and have done , whatever that's worth to you ........ i would not feed her more food , unless she is anorexic skinny , skinny is the best for a pup ......... i would cover her normal amount of kibble in hot water and let it soak in for 5-10 minutes , and feed her the kibble water and all , i would give saccharomyces boulardii a try , anecdotally i would say it works better than any probiotic i've ever used ........ i think the problem with me or anyone telling you that something works , is time sometimes it all it takes regardless of the steps you take.......

She's also just had another awful bowel movement. She was on 5 days of antibiotics with chicken and rice all week. I introduced the kibble back slowly. But this morning, no consistency, brown water. Back to the vets??

A couple of things come to mind. One, if you are feeding more than the recommended amount on the bag that can cause loose stool. Something you could try is adding a tablespoon or two of raw pumpkin. Make sure it is just pumpkin and not the pie filling.

I have a rescue that was too thin and I fed her four pounds of raw blend a day. Now that she has filled out she self regulates and will only eat what she needs, some days less than two pounds.

Thanks ladies and gentlemen. I hadn't considered that it may be over feeding. I've got an appointment this evening at the vets. Poor Millie has been on antibiotics more or less since we got her

. Since she has been on antibiotics for so long you may also want to put her on a probiotic.

Ok. And would you be going back to vets or bland diet for a few days? (2nd bout of brown water 7 hours after this mornings)

I would withhold food for 12 hours. Unless she's acting sick too. Then go to vet. Don't let her drink a lot of water at a time. A few ozs then wait 15 minutes, allow more. Like that.

My EM pup is almost 6 months. I have get on an all stages did and she eats 8 cups a day. 4 in the morning and 4 in the evening. Haven't weighed her in the last 2 weeks but she is about 60-70lbs and you would never guess she eats that much with how she looks.
In contrast my 10 year old GD eats 2-4 cups a day. She sometimes doesn't eat one of the meals.

I'd already headed out to vets PippatheMastiff! Oh well..... another course of antibiotics , which I have to pick up tomorrow and a gel that is a probiotic with binder. As well as bland diet. Again! Costs a fortune in chicken. Fingers crossed this time

Oh Sarah, that's so frustrating! I hope it works this time. Make sure she finishes all the antibiotics or she'll become resistant. Sending healing prayers!

The vet asked if she'd had sickness too. No I said. What did she do when we got home?! Threw up on my sofa! (Leather luckily!!) typical!

Poor Millie...

There is something going on in there. Did they do a fecal at the Vet's?
What kind of antibiotic was she on for this problem?

Metronidazole, usually works wonders.

What type of kibble is she on normally? And what are the ingredients?

you need to not feed that dog for a day , and then feed small amount of chicken and rice , mostly rice ............ I would advise against limiting the dogs water intake , i'd encourage it .......... if when you wean the dog back on regular food it still has diarrhea , try hills prescription diet , or purina sensitive systems for dogs with intestinal issues ..............

Elana.... she was on the antibiotic you named for 5 days but they think that may not have been a long enough course. I will know the name of this course later when I pick it up!

She is on a food we have in the UK called Burns. It is chicken based so I did wonder about the chicken but her poos got better when I fed her cooked chicken and rice so thinking probably not that.

Marke- that's what I'm doing.... mostly rice. She was fine on Burns before this bout but had planned to move her on to a cold pressed food anyway. Thank you!

Poor puppy!!

I'd go back on the chicken and rice, first, and I would also get her a good full spectrum probiotic - quick.
All the antibiotics have probably depleted her gut-bugs, and those can take a while to build back up without extra supplements.... giving bad bugs a chance to get a toe-hold in the system.

We use a supplement called "GI Support" from onlynaturalpet-dot-com that has probiotics and also some herbs that support the GI tract and mucus membranes. It helps Denna when she gets an 'upset' for any reason.
We also have a tub of "probiotic miracle" on hand for occasional supplementation. It has a pretty good variety of probiotic strains in it. But, your local pet shop should have some good options, too. If you have some plain live yogurt in the house, and you don't know of a milk sensitivity, you can give her a dollop of that with each meal until you can get a better dog-based formula.

Does the kibble have chicken in it? Some dogs (a lot of mastiffs) are sensitive to the processed chicken in kibble (even if "real" chicken is ok - i.e. the stuff you're cooking with the rice).
My sister's dog had to go on a hypo-allergenic food to get her sensitive gut in line... she suffered from stress-induced-diarrhea, so anytime we got together was a problem (i.e. holidays). She's a high-anxiety border collie/heeler mix, though.

Hope you can get her back on track!

With her being a bit on the lean side, I'd opt to give her extra food for a while, maybe not "to appetite"... but a few big meals might not be a bad idea... except... too much food can lead to runny poops in an otherwise healthy puppy... and if her system isn't properly digesting what she's eating now, adding MORE food isn't going to help matters. :(

As for "how much" is the right amount to feed... Our vet suggested putting down a big pile of food, and giving the puppy 20 minutes to eat... they should leave some behind. Note how much was consumed, and use that as your starting point for portion sizes... after that, you go by body condition and adjust as needed.

Oh, and another thing you might consider getting once you're back online with normal poops and off antibiotics... is a cranberry based supplement to support the urinary tract. We had good luck with cranberry supplements with our cat - she had one UTI, and we NEVER wanted to repeat that experience again! We have a product called "cranberry wellness" on hand, too (also from onlynaturalpet)....

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Here is a website Elana that explains what it is! Although the brand they talk of on the site is not the one I have. I have a friend who feeds her dog cold pressed and swears it's the best food she's ever fed her dogs.
