I adopted a 10month old Cane Corso, I was told she is purebred but I have never seen her colors. Anyone seen one like here? DNA test pending20210416_170651.jpg

Congratulations on a handsome pup! I also notice he has a nice short crop, which is what I would want if I got a Corso. (I know it's more common to have a longer one).

I think it was regarding the Cane Corso that I read the strong opinion that if it has that sort of black/tan Rottweiler type of markings it's, well, at least not an acceptable coloration. I don't know if the author of what I read also said that it isn't a purebred if it has those markings. Forgive me if I'm putting false information out there. There's a small possibility I was reading about the Boerboel.

I do know of one breeder who is quite visible on youtube that holds that the more stocky, heavy-boned, "rustic" Cane Corsos of today are actually Neo / Rott mixes. It's plausible in my mind, but there could certainly be other breeds in the DNA also.

So cool that you have a DNA test pending. I look forward to hearing about the results!

What actually is Pure Breed when it comes to a Corso.... when they speak of "old rustic" Corso... its generally a mix with Neopalitain Mastiff.... for a larger dog !! The Corso that's in dog shows are generally cut with Boxer... to get a less aggressive and slimmer Corso... AKC will not even register a Corso now unless BOTH parents are already registered... or they come from outside the US.... some people have cut the Corso with Great Danes for height, Pit Bulls from fighting...but honestly I do know that have cut the Corso with Rottie but I have no idea why... that pup most Certainly has Rottie in him no doubt !!

We have a member here with a gorgeous pure Corso with tan points. sjdavenport's boy, Rhaegar. Tan points are an indication of the crossing of recessive genes. They may not be apparent in the parents, but when two dogs with the recessive genes are crossed they can produce certain traits. This is not uncommon and isn't necessarily an indication of cross breeding or poor breeding. The pups with non-standard colors are supposed to be placed in pet homes only and not be used for breeding. Beware of anyone that calls them rare and charges higher prices. There's a lot more to color genetics than it would first appear. Very interesting stuff.

I agree with some of what you are saying Boxergirl ..... I believe the recessive genes are from two parents with with some rotti genes...they come together .... hence the look in this dog.

I'm not saying that a Rottweiler wasn't used at some point. It doesn't mean the parents aren't purebred Corsos or even that a cross was recent. Recessive genes can pop up from generations back. It's been my understanding that recessive genes don't "die out." They remain recessive genes and given the right set of circumstances they show up again. It happens with humans too, be it with skin color or health issues. If I went with a responsible and ethical breeder and a dog with points was produced in a litter, I'd chock it up to recessive genes. If I went with a backyard breeder I'd question a whole lot more.

smart looking dog. I don't see you willing to show him so shouldnt be worry about confirming to every published standard. Definitely tan colors are disqualifier but do you care? Could be from another breed or genes as mentioned above.
