Bringing my EM home

Ya for the first little bit she is gonna cry, like the entire first night lol. Putting the puppy in the bed would stop that but it also will teach her that the bed is her place and that can be a real issue later lol. I am a firm believer in short term loss = long term gain. A week of little sleep due to a crying puppy is worth it to not be kicked out of my bed by a full grown dog for 7 years.

That was my line of thinking. I run a fan at night so that will drown out some of the whining. I think I might set an alarm to get up and take her potty throughout the night, just to be safe. Any idea how many times these babies will need to go out at night?

That wont be too bad. I'm a law student, so I get the customary 5 hours of sleep at night, so I'm only really looking at one wake up to go potty. haha....I hope...

Thats probably about right. You said your a law student? Are you currently in school, or are you gonna be in school when you get the puppy? Are you aware of how much work and time is needed for a new puppy? Im not trying to be rude in anyway, I just wanna make sure you are someone who knows exactly what they are getting into with a new pup.

I understand, and yes. I'm only in class from 9-12 Monday through Thursday and spend the rest of my time at home. I study at home, so I'm usually there most of my day. She will get hours and hours of hands on time and attention. Law school is busy work, but I have plenty of time thankfully. I wouldn't get a puppy if I didn't have the time plus some extra time to devote, as well as the resources. Also, my fiancé and I live together, so there's two of us. No worries, I did my research on everything. That's what I get paid to do ;)

We had a two hour drive. We stopped three or four times to walk and go potty. He slept most of the time but I kept chewies and treats just in case. Don't forget the water bowl and bottled water. I had to buy one on the fly and I thought I was so organized.

Sounds like you actually have quite the ideal situation then which is great to hear, I was a little worried at first lol. Well best of luck with your trip to get him/her and make sure you take lots of pictures. I picked my guy up at 2 months old and he was 18 pounds 8 ounces and now he turns 9 months old on Feb 5th and he is 142lbs already, they grow FAST!

I think a lot depends on the puppy too. Stonewall, was a dream, slept with us for a few weeks and decided "we" weren't fun to sleep so moved to the floor. Also slept throught the night pretty much from the time we brought him home. Ren on the other hand, while also great about making most of the night without going out, never did decide that we weren't fun to sleep with and we ended up getting a king bed at Christmas. She isn't with us all night, but I would say at least 50% of the night. Oh and the cat too. Even with a king bed you can feel a little squished when you wake up with a dog on one side and cat on the other.

I had a 5 hour drive one way when I went to pick Ruger up and he was awesome. They did feed him the very minimum that morning so he never got sick, he pretty much slept the whole way back except for when I woke him to get him out for a bathroom break. I had some bottled water and a little bowl and that was pretty much it (I didn't take a crate). As for the first nights, I let Ruger sleep with me so I didn't have any accidents and woke up immediately if he did. He continued to sleep with me every night for the first 6 or 7 months but now he comes up to lay with me for about an hour or so then goes over to lay beside the bed right beside because he prefers it. Congrats on the new baby. How exciting! Enjoy those little puppy moments because they are gone before you know it. These boogers get big in a hurry! Can't wait to watch your new baby grow up.

Thanks so much for the advice. :) I intend on bringing her home a week before our spring break, so I will have a few days of class then 10 days to work with her.

Franklin was 6 hours away when he was brought to me and he was only 3 weeks old. He had a couple of bottles along the way and slept the rest of the time.

gday, i drove 16 hours to pick up my little mate, Gus, then 16 hours back split in 2, not a problem with him, i stopped every time he woke up to let him go to the toilet, then fed him a little bit etc, he then slept for 2-3 hours then did it again, good time to start the bonding, he has slept every night since without making a noise, he has a bed, but useually chooses to sleep on the tiled or concrete floor, he has not been allowed on the bed. Yet....

Oh wow. Talk about a long drive! I hope I;m lucky enough to get to sleep withour her whining at night. We are putting her crate right next to the bed, so hopefully that will help.
