  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

I have a 10 1/2 old bull mastiff and i was just trying to get some general information that seems hard to zero in on when just searching the internet. He is about 25 inches tall at the shoulder, 93lbs and very lean. We are feeding him Diamond All naturals large breed puppy food and have been directed to keep doing so untill about 2 years. He seems very skinny to me and i wonder if we should be feeding him more. We feed him what the back of the bag tells us to which is 5 cups per day, and he gets no table scraps or human food at all. He does get treats though! Is this an accurate amount of food? Im sure he will fill out but i want to make sure he is getting proper nurishment.

Pics would help.
10 and 1/2 months for a breed that normally actually does not need to be started on a puppy food, is way to long.

I'm hoping it was not your vet that told you that.

There is a food advisor site that would give you a better idea food wise.
Also they should not be spay or neutered until 18 months to 24 months, this can effect growth a lot.

In this post Musicdeb list a great ref, as to feeding andmany other things.

I will upload some pictures of "Tugger" in a bit!

My Vet, Breeder, and multiple bullmastiff owners that we know recommoneded the large breed puppy food for an extended period of time because they develope very slowly over time. My concern was not the puppy food but more the amount and if we should feed him any additional food during the growing process. I was also seeking some feedback as to whether or not his size was reasonable for the breed at this time. He kind of slowed down right at the 9 month mark.

We did also get him nuetuered at the 8 month mark. The vet recommended 6 months but we waited a little but so he could develope more.

Hey there,
Not sure if this will help but its what works for me and mine.....I've been feeding mine on Nutro large breed puppy since we brought them home there 15 months now it suggests to continue until 18 months before changing to adult! Zach is 52kg (114lbs) approx. 26-27cm Bella 41kg (90lbs) 24ish cm I have always followed the directions and tweaked to what works for them as lets face it there all individual. I also feed 3 times a day and that's only because I can as one of us is home around that time to do it, at the breakfast meal I give them a weetbix mixed in, lunch sometimes a grated carrot, and dinner 1/2 cup each of 'minced' (hearts, livers chicken necks and carcus) with a few steamed vegies (all meals with suggested quantity of dry) alternatively maybe with some vegemite in hot water (if its cold) just a little bit as a treat. They also get fruit (bananas, strawbs, kiwifruit) throughout the week. The only scraps they have is a bite of whatever meat we have left over on our plates each night which we will deliberately leave, they don't hover around when were eating as they know at the end they get a treat lol

Like I said I tweak with amounts with what I give them individually, I don't think there overweight. Anyways this is what works for us...

Thank you for your advice! this is what i was looking for. I just wanted some feedback as to what is healthy and okay to feed him while he is growing. Im also glad you are feeding him large breed puppy food as well. I was getting a little concerned i was in the wrong with other other post in here. I think i will try some good clean foods in addition to his suggested amount. Im sure he will love it too!

At 10 months was your boy around 90-100 lbs? Just wondering if this is common. Thank you

Here are a couple pictures of Tugger at 9 months and 90 lbs. Hes stopped growing so rapidly and in the past month and a half has only put on about 3 or 4 lbs. Ill get some current photos too for my profile

No problems, I mean everyone's got there own thoughts and opinions like I said everyone's individual I just sort of stick with what works with me but this forum is amazing and has heaps of primo advise, um just checking now at 10 months Zach was 42.4kg 92lbs and Bella 35kg 77lbs, they seem to have growing spurts every few months Zach gets hungry that's when I know to start tweaking lol I mean he'd eat heaps but he's not actually hungry if you know what I mean but when he is you know. Mine are siblings their size is quite different although most males are bigger ad going by their family tree right back to great grandparents there very simular in looks in the way there growing to where I think they might stop the growing process and actually end up. Anyways hope this helps and good luck with your pup be good to see a picture when you get a chance, we love sharing the love here lol

Ahh I see you already have, he's lovely!

Personally, I don't think there is any concrete evidence to suggest large breed puppy is any better or worse than regular dog food. People have personal preference but these dogs aren't any better off than they were 30 years ago or even before the whole natural dog food $craze$ kicked in.

Just do what works for you and your dog. Everybody thinks their way is the right one so you'll never get consesus on your questions.

Cute pup. He will go through more growth spurts probably, just give him time and enjoy the process. If you ever get another Bullmastiff, I would suggest waiting a little longer to get him fixed for his own growth and health reasons.

is it just me or before a darker bullmastiff fills out he looks kinda like a large boxer (missing the white patch)?

I personally have to agree with this quote, we switched our puppy from large breed puppy food to normal dog food to keep up the costs of feeding both dogs and she seems happy, healthy and growing at a great, normal rate. That's after comparing ingredient for ingredient on both dog foods and realising that we needed to add more protein to the one we switched her too, and other than that it was pretty much the same, so yup I agree!

Hi, your pup is lovely...I have a 5 month old girl and i worry also about her growth. she waits 20 kilos when she supposed to weight about 30 kilos in her age...She looks a bit like your boy..very lean.
I am feeding her barf. Chicken mince meat and a lot of different vegetables and yoghurt.
Is there a chart regarding how heavy and tall Bullmastiffs suppose to be while growing?
