Cane Corso - cropped ear not standing at 8 months

Hi, can anyone help?

Hi everyone, I have scoured the internet for advice and finally decided to make an account here to see if someone can help. I have an amazing 8 month old Cane Corso puppy who had his ears cropped at about 10 weeks. For the most part, I have taped his ears as needed and the right ear is doing a pretty good job of standing. Over the last 6 weeks or so, the left ear has started to flop against the side of his head. It has always been the problem ear but previously it would flop on his head or stand. Currently, after removing the tape, the ear will stand for a few hours. But after he goes to sleep the ear will fall again. If I massage it a bit it will then stand again. Sometimes it goes for 6-7 hours as well. But generally speaking if he goes to sleep (he sleeps with that ear against the ground usually) it will be lazy and fallen. Has anyone had experience of dogs taking this long to get their ears erect or is it simply too late. Or any tips for me to try. I have hope because it still does stand sometimes but not that confident because he's 8 months and it's still having issues. I have attached some pics for reference. Please note that the pic with both ears falling is mostly what the left ear will look like while the right one stays standing. When standing, I have pics of that attached as well.

Look forward to hearing from you kind folk!

Welcome to the forum. It's been really quiet here, but hopefully you'll get better advice than I can give you. I'm not experienced with the shorter crops. I'm a boxer girl and they have the long show crop which can be very problematic, depending on the skill of the person that performs the procedure and the ear leather of the dog. Often it takes a very long time to get them to stand properly. Sometimes they never do. Massage is good and I would say to keep doing that frequently. What are you using to post? We have others on here that know more about posting the shorter crops than I do and I hope they see your post. In the meantime ... more pictures are always welcome.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I usually just wrap his ears with hardwood tape as it comes off easy but also allows them to stand when taped. 2 days ago, the left ear actually was standing on it's own most of the time but today it fell again. I can't do posting with anything in his ears as he shakes like a maniac.

His crop is kind not short and not long either. But iv noticed he shakes his head when the ear is standing. If it falls be stops shaking. Or sometimes he shakes his head and gets it to stand and leaves it as such. It is extremely frustrating because just the decision to crop was so difficult for me as I didn't want to but I was advised by many breeders to do it.

I will try to get some more pics in the coming days and hope someone can help out.

Hello,
My 4 month old CC is having the same problem with only one ear. I’ve been “posting” for just about 3 wks…maybe a tad longer. His left ear only had to be posted 5 days. His right is still needing to be posted but it is starting to come around. I’m going to post pictures of where I started and to where he is now and what my “posting” looks like. Rhonan is my second CC. My first came to me already cropped (cropped at 6 wks) and his ears would lay over on top of his head. I never had to post them… I never massaged them either. They just eventually fixed themselves in a relatively short amount of time. With Rhonan I had his ears cropped just shy of 12 wks. As you will see the left ear is standing erect beautifully and the other does as well with it’s posting. I take the “posts” out every Saturday evening and allow the ear to “rest” and repost Sunday evening. At every reposting Rhonan shakes his head and scratches at the posting and at every reposting I have to put the “Collar of Shame” on him until he gets used to it…usually by the next day. I researched extensively on different methods of taping and posting and my first attempt was the “nasal strips and super glue” method. Well it literally would only stay glued to his ear for 2 days, no matter what type of super glue I used or how clean I got the ear prior to gluing. So I finally decided on the “moleskin method” which you can find all over YouTube. I have found that using Torbot’s Bonding Cement (used on skin to adhere stoma’s, colostomy bags and the like) from Amazon works the best but you most definitely have to follow the directions. Yes you have to apply the glue and let it dry until it’s tacky to the moleskin AND to the ear. DOES NOT WORK unless you let it dry for at least 2-3 mins on both ear and moleskin (separately) before affixing the moleskin to the ear. It literally stays on a full 5-6 days. You will want to purchase the Uni-solve Adhesive Remover wipes as well to remove the residue from the pup’s ear. I will post some pictures of my pup pre-posting, posted and last one is from today after removing posting. His ear is standing (YAY!) but not as erect as the other but lovely to see it’s heading in the right direction! I’ll keep you posted on the progress.

I think your dogs ears will be fine! Nero is too old now at almost 11 months and the one ear simply refuses to stand. I may look at surgical correction at this point. Or maybe something sneaky that helps it stand but isn't entirely noticeable lol.

I’m having the same problem! Our 16 week old cane corso has one ear that Will Not Stand! She will not tolerate tape for more than 2 hours🤦‍♀️

My Corso puppy had the same problem. People sometimes take the posts out too early. I reposted them and kept them posted for two months and he was fine after that. His ears were posted when I got him (8 weeks old) and I kept them posted for two months after getting him. I am not sure what the material is called that was posted in his ears, but it was strong but soft at the same time and would not allow his ears to bend unless a lot of pressure was put on them. It almost looked like a leather type material, and I used Torbots Bonding Cement to keep the posts in. I would take him to the vet every two weeks to have the posts removed and his ears cleaned, then put the posts back in, after two months (he was 4 months old) I was able to remove the posts and his ears looked great! Hope this helps
