Dane chicken wing question

I do not have dane.. I have a mastiff but on a raw diet facebook group I was talking with a nice guy about his 4 yr old male dane who just started raw a few weeks ago and was having an 'explosive' issue last night with his boy...
Basically it boiled down to the guy was trying to mix in stuff too fast and liver was the culpit...
Anyway we were talking about how his boy wasn't digging chicken too much other than the legs... and part of his issue was he just plopped a whole chicken in front of him and the poor dog was scared of it...LOL... (this guy was really nice and had the best of intentions but seemed to need a bit more coaching to his approach) so I told him to maybe start breaking the whole chicken up into pieces instead of just the whole thing... and maybe try some wings with the legs and then maybe break the thighs up into a couple pieces to get him started...
Well, this one chick comes along and says his dane is way to big to be giving wings to and that he should stay away from such small parts... now... I chose to not reply to this because I'm not gonna start a fb argument over something as trivial as chicken wings.... also.. since I'm only about 2-2.5 months into raw myself... I dont consider myself to be an expert on the subject. .. but I dont feel what she said is correct... I know most research I've done says to make sure you chop that 3rd 'knuckle' on the wing to make sure they don't try and swallow it whole and it gets stuck... am I right or should I not be feeding the wing to my mastiff as well?

I am very careful about feeding wings. I've fed them but try to avoid them. It is also up to the individual dog. Little Jezzy, I will feed her anything. She is a great chewer and has it down to a T. Kismet and Justice, I don't trust them with anything, they will swallow as soon as they think they can get it down. I'm a worrywart though.

Lol I get that... and I, honestly, have only ever chopped them up for cinder... mostly because I was in the stage of chopping everything for her puppy self... but I choped them in tradional thirds and she did fine with them... I can see where one might avoid feeding them because of worrying they might choke... but for her to say the dog is just too big to feed them at all... seemed to be a reach...

It's really a "know your dog" thing, IMO. Mateo does fine with wings, but he is a slow eater---he even takes his time crunching through chicken feet. If the dog is a gulper, then, no- I wouldn't.

I think the big problem with wings - as you mentioned - is that third joint, which is potentially acting as a "barbed hook" if the dog swallows it whole, or doesn't chew enough... so... I agree with NYDDB - it's another 'know thy dog' issue - if your dog likes to chew, wings should be ok. If you dog likes to chomp&swallow, probably not a good option - especially for our big pups.

Denna doesn't get much chicken, so we don't have to worry about it here. :\
She does get chicken feet (the plus of joint juice outweighs her potential allergy issue) - and she likes to chew those... but, they also don't have the double-joint problem.

I do not feed chicken wings because Sonny is a gulper. If I was only feeding my smallest(11# terrier) I would feel safe. She chews everything quite well. Really is a personal preference but I would most definitely consider chopping into thirds.

Wings was a no no for me with Max as he was more than capable of attempting to swallow them before he'd finished chewing.
But no problem at all with Jack as he was a lot smaller.
If this Dane was mine I'd not feed him wings. And if this guy is just dumping a whole chicken in the bowl I'd not recommended he does either. Not yet at least.
If he want to feed wings then I'd tell him to hold them to ensure the dog chews them up properly.
Or chop them up.
