DDB Masks

I know that there are 3 "mask types" for DDBs. I am pretty sure I know what a black mask looks like. I have a BM. But what is the difference between a red mask and a no mask, on a red dogue??? I'm a little lost and haven't been able to find any helpful pics online. Thanks

I think the "red" mask is more of a brown... like a "red" Dobe is really more of a brown

Actually funny thing I just had this conversation with a DDB owner the other day, according to him a red mask and no mask is the same thing, black mask is apparently quite rare, like 5% or something like that then the rest are no mask, or red mask, whatever you wanna call it. As I said thats what I was told by one owner who seemed to be quite knowledgable but I could be wrong to.

From what I understand, the DDB mask isn't what you'd normally think of as a "mask" on a dog, it's more like accent colors on the lips, eye rims, and nose area than a full-on facial pigment. I found a couple of sources that say the mask color should match the nose color; so a pink/neutral color is no mask, brown nose is a brown mask, black nose is a black mask.

I believe Ravendarat to be correct. Current used terminology is no mask. It was formerly know as red mask. They are the same thing though.

Marrowshard,

Great pictures as examples of the different masks.

Although you would either call your dogue a no mask or a brown mask (whichever one they favor the most), I believe that you can have masks somewhere in between the two (I.e not quite a total reddish pigmentation and not quite a total brownish pigmentation. There is no mistaking a black mask, nose is black).

Thanks guys! There is actually a breeder close by that specializes in Black masked DDBs and I was courious as the other close by breeders do not. Some black masked DDBs look similar to a red BMs if you ask me.

I agree... I was looking at puppies before we decided on Brodie instead... and we almost got a male black mask puppy... but.. I just didnt like the look of black mask. They do look a lot like Bullmastiffs... Not that there is anything wrong with bullmastiffs they are beautiful... they were infact our second choice breed. but... I like brown mask or no mask bordeaux.. just my preference... lol.

my sister on the other hand, who has two brindle male BMs LOVES the black mask bordeaux...

I ran across a litter of pups yesterday. breeder had two left. One had the red mask(?) One had the black mask. How acceptible is this in showing. Man glad this thread was going before i said anything. i thought the pup was a mutt. mouth shut for once. and i got to walk away with my dignity.
