I agree with what's said here definitely not the English Mastiff for protection against bears an alarm yes...We live in the country and my big boy is absolutely terrified of strange wildlife...Diesel will sit in the back yard and bark continually at the rabbits, ravens and deer until they leave but never would he even consider chasing after them...He is just a huge huggable, loveable marshmallow...My German Shepherds on the other hand would be gone after them in a heartbeat if given the opportunity...There is a dog called a Karelian Bear Dog and that is their sole purpose to hunt bear and offer protection against them ...Here is a link...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karelian_Bear_Dog

Good call on the Curs, I'd almost forgotten about them. Might be hard to find in the northern states, but they're a nice non-mastiff option.

Hi there. All the mastiff breeds are wonderful alarm protectors, but IF you really need a bear protection the decision is a PACK of Pakistani mastiff, Karakachan or Kangals, which unfortunately you can find in their full glory only in the countries of origin ( Pakistan, Bulgaria and Turkey). I know there is a guy in Toronto area , that breeds the Bully Kuta(pakistani ones)and some very few breeders for KArakachan ,you just need to do lil a bit more of research. Second back up is a TM or Presa Canario, again the same issue with the pure and ''poor'' bred.. And also you need to be a very strong pack leader to hold all those:) Good luck and love to all the mastiffs:)

PS-Not to underestimate a Caucasian Sheperd dog, old style Mastini, FIla or Cane :) Just read and think a lot before you get the new addition !

Thank you to all who offered their excellent advice, I am sooo excited, my husband bought me an English
Mastiff and I cant wait to pick him up on June 12. After meeting the parents and hearing that big, loud,
Deep bark from the proud Papa, I know I made the right choice in a first line alarm system :)
