Does anyone do Rally Obedience with their dogs?

I was watching some videos on rally obedience and it didn't seem too hard and I think Hector and I can do it. Anyone tried this with their dogs? I might just set up my own stations at home and practice for fun and work on hand signals. I really need to come up with more clear and concise hand signals.

I'm certain these big dogs can do rally, & do it well. I've been trying for 2 years to get into rally classes at my local obedience club; my work schedule just doesn't permit it. Kind of a sore spot with me...I'm hoping that I'll be able to enroll in the January class. I'm not sure how well Ruby & I, or Sunny & I, would do without some classes under our belt. I like the idea of a trainer helping us out, mainly with foot work& hand signals. If you decide to do it, please try & get someone to video it so I can watch!

I did Rally. My dog got his Novice title in one weekend with multiple high in class. its SUPER easy, as long as you can read the signs (which apperenlty I cannot always do lol). :)

Oh Hell no if there is reading involved I'm out!!
And the dogs are no help in that department either!

You're right, it does look quite easy. I wonder what the purpose behind rally obedience ?

I've been trying to find something to do with my dog that is actually flexible around my schedule and not too far from where I live and looking around I found that this might work. The other thing I was thinking of was flyball, but I don't think my dog will be okay with so many dogs around in such close proximity. I'd love to make a video as long as I can get someone to hold the camera lol.

I think the purpose to encourage owners to do at least something with their dogs. Much better than nothing and not as challenging as some other sports. AND you really do NOT need any classes for rally

If your dog has prey drive, look at Lure Coursing. The AKC has something new called the "Barn Hunt". They hide rats in small cages and your dog hunts through a maze of hay bails trying to find them. We're going to try it this weekend.

My dog has low drive. His prey drive is kicks in when he's excited or when it comes to the real thing, so yeah...but I will look that up and see if it's worth the drive.

I contacted the obedience club near me; they're finally going to offer some classes on my day(s) off. So I think I'm going to start Ruby later on this month. Can't wait.

Barn Hunt sounds like fun. Did you try it Hector? My girl has a high prey drive, she got her first coursing title this summer and I have no doubt she will earn some more, but I never heard of Barn Hunt....I have to look into this!

I think barn hunt will be a good one for Hector. Live prey is his thing. However, to get to any of these things I'd have to drive 1-2hrs to get there and it would not work out with my work schedule unless there are open classes for people like me. Same with lure coursing. Good luck !

Did you ever get hector his rally title?

Nope. It's hard with this work schedule. I might check with the trainer to see if I can just come to class when I can make it. We haven't been training much - the house is a mess due to renovations. I looked into herding, but when the lady said "depending on how well he works with the handler (which doesn't mean me)".......yeah that won't work.

I was hoping you would say yes... Lol. I just got my EM pup his. It really is a good obedience foundation for your dog so I had fun working with them to achieve it. The best part that he did and it was the slow walk he has that down... But through all the practice and training for it he walks perfect on a leash and does his basic obedience like down and sits when I tell him too so it's all been worth it trying to get it. Also with all of the distractions going on during the test it can be fairly challenging

It sounds fun and I'm going to have to take classes first and I really don't know if I will be able to make the competitions because of the time. I need to look into it and I am proud of you and your pup!

We are half way through our novice rally class with 10 month old corso. We will try to do a trial at the end of June. I'll let you know if we qualify. I think the hardest thing is to keep your dog's attention on you the entire time. There are lots of distractions, like other people and dogs, judges, food all over the ground. We are working through it. If you have a strong heel and focus, everything else is a piece of cake.

Are you allowed to hold a piece of food in your hand? lol

In akc rally no you are not. Any extra commands are points off. Plenty of distractions move for sure but what I feel that it is really good for which is walking your dog and your dog doing what you ask when you ask it to do it you have distractions all over the place in the real world also so I felt it is fair. The weekend that my dog took his test half of the dogs fail or did not pass then the other half had very high scores deservedly
