Droopy eyelids

I was walking kazmaier after work today and ran into the veterinarian that owns the clinic here in my small town. I had never gone to this clinic as I had dealt with another clinic pretty far from where I live. Ironically, he was with another man who owned a neapolitan mastiff who recently passed at 9 years old. I got to asking this "town vet" whether he was familiar with this breed etc...etc.. And he says he has dealt with the mastiff breed for many years. He friend who was with him piped in saying how amazing he was. Anyway....he proceeded to point to out how droopy kazmaier's eyelids were..he called it something...I can't remember...and said they were prone to conjunctivitis when they are like that...I currently have that problem with Kaz cause his eyelids droop so much...anyway I thought the droopy eyelids were normal in this breed? Am I wrong to think this? Could this be problematic in the future and could this be why Kaz has junk in his eyes at times? I had a look at some pictures and there are.neos with droopy eyes and ones with not so droopy eyes. Could he need surgery to fix this?

Baci has the same problem. After her eye surgery, it became even more pronounced. We went back to the Veterinary Ophthalmologist yesterday, and because she's still growing the weight of the wrinkles on her head is pushing down into her eyes. She also has an usually large eye opening. So, when she hits 18 months, we'll do a surgery to reduce the size of the eye opening, and pull the wrinkles back a bit. She's on the ragged edge of entropian now. Her wrinkles are so far down her head now, she can barely see. I was so careful when buying her to check out the parents eyes, hips etc. So much for that.

I thought it was part of the breed because of the heavy wrinkles. I've been fortunate so far to not encounter cherry eye. If Otis never gets it when he's older i plan on having the droop tightened up a little.

Milton, if I recall correctly, you feed Kirkland Nature's Domain....when I went through a bag of it, Thor had tonnes of gunk in his eyes. TOTW gave him the second most gunk.
Maybe try changing kibble first to see if eye goop is reduced!

My previous male neo had very droopy excessive skin on his head and around his eyes and he never had a problem with gunk in his eyes. I think the only reason to have excess skin removed from the area around the eyes is if the skin is pushing down and rolling the eyelid inward which causes the eyelashes to rub on the eye which is called entropian. My English bulldog had this issue and had surgery to fix it and she had no where near the amount of wrinkle or droop as my Neo.

Thor. I thought about that also..kaz's is starting to have some skin issues now to. He has patches of dry flakes skin where the fur has thinned out so it looks like he has some dark patchy spots on his shoulders. I'm thinking it could be the food. What did you switch over to to help with that problem?

Belmas...Kaz has the droop on the bottom lid so his eyes are actually exposed a lot. There are nobproblems with anything in his eye. Just to much inner lid exposed which I think could be causing the junk in his eyes but as Thor mentioned. I think I'm going to have to try a good change. Here is a picture of his bottom lids

Is Kaz allergic to chicken? If he is, then your options get pricier...try Acana Pacifica or FirstMate Pacific Ocean Fish.
If he is okay with chicken, then Acana Wild Prairie.

After my experiment with Nature's Domain, I tried TOTW Southwest Canyon and Thor still had goop in his eyes but a little less. Then went to Acana Wild Prairie and barely had to clean his eyes anymore. Currently he's on Orijen Six Fish which I ended up buying at 25% off.

I would try to stick to the Canadian brands if I were you cause our meat is free of hormones and antibiotics. Acana and Orijen actually tell you the names of the farms all their meats come from. Plus if you go by calories, Acana and Orijen will fill your pup up with less than most other kibble.

Btw I've been feeding Orijen and Acana for 6 years with Shadow. The first couple Orijen and the last 4 Acana. In fact when I brought Thor home, he ate Acana Chicken and Burbank Potato for the first little while till I switched anticipating that he may be allergic to chicken in kibble which he doesn't seem to be.

I've noticed Otis eye lashs are rolled in from his upper wrinkle.

Opie has quite a droop on the bottom of his eyes just like Kaz. Haven't had any issues with cherry eye or goop, but he does have some tearing. He also had some dry skin issues a while back and I switched him from Wellness Core Chicken to the Ocean Whitefish formula and his coat is not dry anymore and is soft and shinny.

Costco sells a fish blend grain free that I think I will try first. Thanks Thor and Opie is adorable! Looks just like my Kaz!

Opie's eyelashes roll in slightly but don't seem to be a problem. I wouldn't worry unless he starts having issues with his eyes. My bulldog had watery eyes all the time and would get eye infections, that's when I took her to the vet and they said the eyelashes were actually scratching her eyes and she would need to get any eye tuck to fix the problem. She had the surgery and has had no problems since.

I dont have a neo but rather a fila and I recently noticed this with him. His eyes droop as well and lately they are full of gunk. Any idea what causes this or what I could do? He is in temperament and for obvious reasons I'd like to avoid the vet if possible.

I recently had kazmaier to the vet and was prescribed some eye gel for pink eye as he has conjunctivitis which is very common when the eyes are droopy. All sorts of dust gets in there and so it's good to have the drops or gel on hand...if your pharmacy sells anything for pink eye then try that.

Hi Tubarao'smom, entropian, where the eyelids roll inward and ectropian where the eyelids roll outward and droopy eyelids are inherited traits. Surgery can relieve all three problems.
