Goliath, new baby !

Goliath turned 7 months on the 8th, weighing in at 145, i was a bit surprised of the growth/weight not being as remarkable as the other months, then i started noticing why in that same day...

Goliath lost a good part of his baby fat and became much more muscular in the past 2 months, seeing as how the same thing applies to me, when i started training again (gym, boxing) my muscle mass replaced my fat mass, so it did'nt look like i was loosing weight, but i was, only replacing it by muscle mass, Goliath's mass grew, ( chest, head etc... ) but his muscle definition is coming out slowly, which explains the slower jump in weight, he just gained major muscle mass and lost a good part of baby fat.

Personality is still coming out, he now refuses to be bullied by other dogs at the park, the older and bigger dogs are giving him more respect as they pushed him around when he was smaller, they can't budge him as much now, Goliath budge's them around now. Furthermore, of all the dogs that attend that dog park, my dog is the only one, that sits next to me when i tell him too, to let dogs walk in or out the park, he listen's to his master like no other. When it's time to go home, he follows, looks back at his friends sometimes, but knows it's time to go. He likes to play around a lot with me, head charging into my side, bitting my forearm, and yes, he still talks a lot. I'm one happy guy, best friend to have.

A question to the BoerBoel community, i'd rather have your answer's than a vet's, cause truly, none of them can answer me adequatly on Mastiff growth, and i have about 100's different theories about it all.

The one that seems to make the most sens is a steady growth until he hits 18 months, then it slows down until he reaches 3 years (mostly chest and head).

Other's i've heard :

-growth stops totally at 9 months.
-weight of the dog at 4 months x 2 is his adult size
-12 months growth

What have you guys noticed with your Boerboel ?

Sincerely, always,

Karl

Goliath sounds just like mine. Grow like mad then just stop and drop a few pounds. Then creep back up until 18 months. At 18 months they go into a development mode that depends on what you do with them. If you let them do their own thing they will just be average. But if you press them make them work like hiking or pulling then they start to develop more mass in the neck shoulders, croup and thighs. The males seem to keep growing for 3 to 4 years but you get a general idea at about 2.5 years of the max weight plus or minus 10 Lbs. The females (well Jade) seem to just stop at 2.5 years. She got up to 130 and dropped to 125 and stuck there.

Growth
Males
3 to 5 months growing starts to speed up
5 to 9 months Fast grow then drop some as the fat burns away.
8 to 9 months fat starts to drop off muscle building starts.
9 to 18 months body gets thicker, chest drops.
18 to 28 months final height @ 24 months dog develops to workload
28 to 36 months full maturity and dog gets wide and finishes development.

Females
3 to 5 months growing starts to speed up
5 to 9 months Fast grow then drop some as the fat burns away.
8 to 9 months fat starts to drop off muscle building starts.
9 to 18 months body gets thicker, chest drops.
18 to 28 months final height @ 24 months dog will develop to workload and finish to maturity. No real weight or height changes from here on.

Super DMikeD, that means i have yet at least another year of crazy feeding bills ! lol !

So final height will be around 18 months, ok, that's what i thought, good.

I will definitely have him work when his bones are strong and mature, He already seems to love the snow, the deep thick one ( we have had tons of it this season in Quebec, Canada)
thanks a ton for the input, at least now i can gage his growth much better !

You should get a sled for him to pull you on. They make these real cool ones that a person stands up in and the dog pulls around.

Goliath's about to turn 8 month's, there was a major leap in the past month in his attitude towards other dogs, he became much much more dominant and assertive towards others at the dog park, to an extent where i'm sometimes checking on him not to attack other dogs ( happened 3 times now, when another dog comes to interfere with his playing with another) and he does, to my surprise, overpower even mature males, Goliath must be close to 160 pds ( only weigh him on his birthday ) he eats 3.5 pds of raw meat daily... plus veggies etc... he just cannot play with the pups his age anymore, and the mature males, try to put him back on track, but they just dont cut it. Also, he only seems to be nicer to his older pals, the ones that saw him at2 months old, but he still plays rough with them...

Is it still a good idea for me to have him socialize this way ? Or is he marked by the Mastiff gods to only be nice to his master, his close ones, and other humans, yet a threat to some/most other dogs ?

I don't belive in violent reactions to his actions, i dont ever hit him, but i do raise my voice a lot. He listen's but i wonder if it's a phase or is he becoming something i totallyignored about Mastiff's ? MY italian mastiff was never this rough or strong.

Regards,

Karl

8 months yesterday, 162 pds. Muscular, very very playful, he now growls at a low tone at the sight of strangers, standing straight and very assertive, an 18 month old great dane tried to mount him 3 days ago, thatgreat dane, will not try it again, ever. I still getting surprised at how that breed will not take any abuse or pestering from other dogs, don't get me wring he is playful, with most, but any adult dog that tries to rough him up, or intimidate him, Goliath, even this young, will not have it, if i take the great dane's episode, he was head butted, growled and body checked and also snapped his jaw a few times at the Great Dane into leaving him alone, it worked.

If you are worried that he might attack other dogs then no he should not be going to the dog park anymore, for the safety of all the dogs. At 8 months he likely is entering his teenage phase. And like a teenager is going to be pushing boundaries to figure out which rules he can bend or break. There was about a month or so when Kryten was that age that he was no longer allowed to go to the off leash because he had gotten too pushy with other dogs (no aggression or dominating behaviors just bad manners) so once he remembered the rules he was allowed to go back. With a dominant dog the break may have to be permanent.

10 months, 182 pds., 1 hair shy of 32" high. Eats more then the 6-9 months stage, super energetic, super strong, slight broadening of the shoulders, chest, neck and head. Always wanting to play, insists on cuddling in bed, has to watch a movie with me on the same couch head on my lap and if i don't massage his ears or head he pushes and shove's with his nose in my stomach or rib cage or thigh's to get me to do it. He still talks a lot like A LOT lol...
