  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Hey guys...
Grady has been favoring his left leg for about a week. We figured maybe he was playing too hard but I wanted to make sure so I took him in today. He's showing signs of early problems in his left hip. The big D word came up... dysplasia. The vet is putting him on a lower calorie/lower protein diet (Sierra Mountain) which he was on... but we switch up between that and the Bison formula. Also, fish oils and a lower exercise/play routine. No xrays at this point but it's scary and depressing since he's only 8 months. He growled for the first time when they did the flexion/extension tests on his leg so it's definitely bothering him but he's not in acute pain. Only when tested. So for now, we wait. Hopefully it's just a growing stage and slowing him down will help. Although, he's a smaller Mastiff to begin with at 87lbs and 8 months which isn't a great thing if he's showing these signs and not huge. UGH. I'm so upset. I emailed his breeder just to let her know what's going on... but there's no way we'd give him up. I just hate to think of the possibility of him having hip issues so early and maybe forever. We went through knee reconstructions with our last dog, Samson and he did fine, lived a long happy life but I hate to go through all that again. Depressing. Anyway... if anyone has gone through this and had it work itself out with diet/drugs/therapy... let me know. I'd love to hear some good news. Hoping it all works out. We will do whatever it takes for him but I'd like him to live a normal pain free life, of course. Thanks.

Good vibes sent out to Grady and his family. We use phycox and I have been happy with the results. Our male either pulled or tore the ligament behind the stifle and it seemed to speed up the healing. Our female came from a dysplastic bitch and seems to have a little looseness in the rear, so we started her on it and seems to be getting better.

Thanks guys. I'll look up phycox. He'll be on fish oil and vitamin supplements too. Hoping it's just growing pains.

Sorry to hear Grady's having issues. Just make sure you're using the puppy bison formula of TOTW if you're going to switch back and forth between Sierra mountain and high prairie. The adult formula has too much calcium and the calcium:phosphorus ratio is high and you don't want the poor boy to have any more issues. Keep us posted and ill be thinking of you all!

Thanks Smart Family... we are doing all Sierra until further notice and we go back to the vet in a month. The switch didn't affect his stool at all so that was good. Added a fish oil twice a day and glucosamine and Ester C. He's not liking having to take more "naps" in his kennel when he and Gimli, our other dog get too rough but we're trying to keep him more docile with his hips. Hoping for the best results and doing all we can! I usually give him a little hip/leg massage daily. Keep the blow flowing. My husband is completely jealous of all the attention Grady is getting! Hahaha

Yes... I'm so nervous now. Anytime someone wants to "MAKE" him sit by pushing his hind down I yell at them! NO! His hip! But he's not limping or anything... I just see him favoring that left side from time to time so we are being proactive. I over analyze every little movement. I'm trying to chill out. It is what it is, afterall. If he turns out perfect... great! If he needs medical treatments... we are prepared to go all in too so I suppose worrying about it is a waste of energy at this point. Just going to take it one day at a time and do everything we can to promote healthy joints! No running for Grady. I'm sure he'll like more couch time anyway.

Make sure you are also giving Vit E along with the fish oil !!!!!!!! Never give fish oil only

Fish oil depletes vit E, both are very good to give, but both should be given. Do not rely on Vit E contained in your dog food
