  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Greetings from the Midwest!

Been a long while since I last typed up an introduction. Let me see if I can get the breaks for the paragraphs to work....

So hello there community! To get the basics out of the way, my name is Megan Joy, and I'm a 20 year old college student majoring in Animal Science. At the moment the end goal is to become an AI Technician, but that may change.

While I 'technically' don't personally own any dogs, I am no stranger to them. Both my mother and I are practically dog crazy! I can't even remember a time when our house was without the presence of a dog. From Labs to mixed breeds, and from the intelligent Australian Shepherd to the independent Great Pyrenees. Dogs have been, and are, an important part of my life.

Which brings me to the reason why I joined this forum. I'm very seriously considering being a (semi)first time dog owner-- and I would like my first dog to be from a reputable breeder(there are several reasons other reasons as to why). Of course it will be a couple years before I'm able-- both financially and geographically.

The trouble is, I'm not sure which breed would be suitable for me. I've researched, albeit lightly, on several breeds, but I have specific questions that I'm not sure where I can find the answers to. Basically, I'm not 100% certain where to begin.

And that's why I came here! I'll be making a proper thread a bit later, and hopefully I put it in the right section of the forums.

With that I thought I'd share a couple pictures of the family dogs.

This is our Lhasa Apso Latte, he's about 6 if I remember right, and the grumpy one of the household. (This is an old picture, but the only one I have right now. The other two are Skye and Bear, both deceased.)

This here is miss Nevi(or Nev-Nev) who is 2 now. She's 1/2 Newfoundland, 1/4 Pyrenees, and 1/4 Bernese. So far everyone we meet has been able to guess the Newfie part, or they guess that she's a Flat Coated Retriever.
Nevi--1 year
Nevi--2 year

And finally, the newest addition, is my mother's boy, Gunner. He's 4 months right now and a Great Dane/Mastiff mix.

Well, that's a lot longer than I originally intended. So, thank you for taking the time to read this! I hope to speak with you all very shortly.

Welcome and none of your pics show up for me.

Shoot, I was wondering about that. I'll try posting them here instead of linking them with a different source. Hopefully they'll pop up.

Now that classes are done for the day-- I wanted to say thank you for all the welcomes! I've never joined a dog forum before, so this is all very new to me.

I do have a newbie question if that's all right?
When posting a thread asking about different breeds, would that go under the General Mastiff Discussion section? I want to double check so I don't post it in the wrong place.

Welcome! Good looking dogs! I think you'd probably get more hits if you post in the General forum instead of breed specific one.

Awesome! Thank you, I'll be sure to post there then!
Beautiful dogs. And Nevi seems to love the snow.
Oh definitely! Snow, water, squirrels, mice, corn stalks, etc.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to be able to discuss with the community! There's a bunch I want to cover and I'm currently organizing what I'd like to ask/discuss.

Hey! Welcome to the Forum. Those are some beautiful pups you got there! You sound like are great person, I would highly suggest you do a lot of research on different breeds before you choose on one. You might even want to chat with you mom and see her opinion? (Looks like she's no stranger to doggies!) Also check out some local dog parks or competitions to see some pups in person, and chat with the owners if you get a chance. Also, you may want to check out some shelters and do some volunteering there? A awesome way to meet different pups/animals and people, and also great experience to put on your resume for the future.... plus your doing a great thing! :)

Thank you! I definitely agree, more research is needed before I make such a big decision!

While my mother is aware of my decision, I haven't been able to see what she thinks since she's been sick the past couple days. Once she gets better I'll be sure to bring it up! I have also started checking around to see if there are any local competitions soon. So far I've come up empty handed. The dog park we go to is a little tricky, it's not too well known, though I have met a brindle Bullmastiff a couple years back. You never know!

As for shelters, I'm currently trying to reach one that's a few minutes away. They rescue not only dogs but horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, etc. :D

Welcome! Beautiful pups!

Thank you!

I'm a bit of a bouncer. Right now I'm in eastern Nebraska for college, but I'm originally from southwest Iowa, near the Omaha area.

I'm originally an Iowa girl too. Southeast Iowa. My town boasted the largest swing-span bridge still in operation. And a prison. Lol.
