Hello, Mastiff Forum

Hi. I am doing introductions. I am a retired English and reading teacher who finished seminary training in Chicago 5 years ago. I am the pastor of a church in Dubois, PA. I am married to my best friend Joyce, and we have two/three children: Connie, David, and a grandson we raised since his birth, Christian. We share our home with a black lab named "Coal," and a mastiff our grandson fell in love with and brought home, "Chevy." Chevy loves to play and romp a bit, but has developed a limp in his driver's side front leg and we are keeping him downstairs and quiet to prayerfully see some improvement. Chevy is 6 months old at present. He weighs 97 pounds. Thanks for having this informative forum, and any input about a 6 month old mastiff with a limp front leg, let me know. Blessings and best regards, Pastor Dave

You are doing the right thing by limiting his activity. Aspirin is probably OK for him. If Chevy is still limping after another day or two, I'd get him to the vet. These big puppies can very easily pull a muscle or tendon since their growth rate is all over the place.

Also google or search here for pano/panosteatis. Also common in large and giant breed puppies and usually self-limiting, in other words it will resolve with proper diet and management.

What are you feeding him? Large and giant-breed pups need limited calcium and a sensible calcium: phosphorus ratio. You can't just grab a bag of food off the shelf for them at the grocery store, especially puppy food. The wrong diet can seriously mess a dog up.

I agree to taking him to a vet. He could just have something in his paw or maybe a spider bite.

Another vote for the Vet. You don't want a giant breed pup to have a treatable leg condition go untreated. BTW, did you attend McCormick in Chicago? I know some who have.

SORRY IF I HAVE THIS INCORRECT. CHEVY THE MASTIFF WAS BETTER TODAY, BUT I NOTICE SOME FAVORING HIS DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT LEG WHEN HE GETS UP FROM A NAP. MUCH BETTER TODAY, HOWEVER. I HAVE BEEN FEEDING HIM A MIXTURE OF IAMS PUPPY CHOW AND 4-HEALTH FOR LARGE BREED DOGS PURCHASED FROM TRACTOR SUPPLY. I AM CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT I FEED OUR DOGS. SHOULD I STOP THE PUPPY CHOW. SOMETIMES I MIX A LITTLE OF OUR LAB'S FOOD, WHICH IS PURINA ONE MIXED WITH 4-HEALTH FOR ADULT DOGS. I INTEND TO MAKE A VET APPOINTMENT SOON IF THIS DOESN'T IMPROVE. OUR MASTIFF'S BUTT IS HIGHER THAN THE FRONT SHOULDERS, WHICH SEEMS TO ADD SOME STRAIN ON THE FRONT END. ANY FURTHER THOUGHTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANKS, LIZ.

welcome to the forum.
I would say take him to a vet.
thanks...vet appointment will be made monday if chevy doesn't improve. Today was a lot better....he only seems stiff when he gets up from a nap. His rear end is higher than the front shoulders which seems to put more strain on the front. Any further thoughts ???

hi, bob. I am licensed with the evangelical covenant church associated with northpark university in chicage. I completed my license in chicago with these folks. However, i was hired to be the pastor of an independent church in dubois, pa, and i like the job very much...."livin' the dream' as they say. Thanks for asking. Have a great day. Our mastiff is doing better, and i'm trying to learn to negoiate this site....which strikes me as not too easy. I taught at 2 universities, but these websites make me feel like a 3rd grader.

It's probably most likely pano as LizM stated. It will go away on its own. Stick with a food that has a pretty close 1:1 ratio of calcium and phos. Fromm brand dog food is a brand that I can think of that has that ratio. Although more expensive foods like arcana and orijen might have it too, but I don't feed those so I don't know. It's your choice whether you want to stop with the purina. If he's not having any allergic reactions to it (itchy skin, yeast, sores, etc) then it's okay, but personally I will not feed that junk food.

Go easy with rough play and hard exercise until he's past this limpy stage.

I know that 4 Health Salmon and Potato also has the correct ratio of calcum and phos. 4 Health is a better food than purina and you get more for your $ as the first ingredient isn't a filler.

Hi Pastor Dave, I agree that Purina isn't the best food (far from it!) and I'll trust others on the 4-Health, I'm not familiar with it. Just keep limiting his activity. At his age I'd think it quite normal for his topline and other proportions to go a little wonky as he's still growing and all the bits don't grow at the same rate. :)

What did you teach? My interest lies mostly in apologetics, doctrine and Near East Studies. Trying to self study Ugaritic lately - on top of everything else... :p

Watch stairs and slippery surfaces. Don't let your pup run up or down stairs. Always supervised and not up and down constantly. Make sure he isn't running too hard/too much also. As previously stated, these big boys have issues because they grow so fast and big. Agree with the vet being needed if not better. 4 baby aspirin a few times a day would help too.

Max is still higher in the hind end and he's 18 months now. Hoping your pup is feeling better soon and lots here on the forum about limping.

Apologetics

HI, BOB. I WAS IN CLASS WITH THE LATE DR. WALTER MARTIN, WHOM YOU MIGHT BE FAMILIAR AS A WORLD RESPECTED APOLOGETICS TEACHER. I FIND MYSELF ATTRACTED TO THE BASICS OF "KNOWING WHY I BELIVE WHAT I BELIEVE. Switching to lower case. I use all caps to separate my answer from your kind response. I am assuming you are a student of Christian apologetics. In the large realm of apologetics, I study mostly the basics of the major cults of my area, and teach classes about these folks, witnessing to them, and at the very least, offering a challenge. They are tough nuts, for sure. I recently had conversation with the "Oneness Pentacostals", a kind of Jesus only group who denies the trinity. These folks require baptism in Jesus name only, obedience to the scriptures, and the baptism in the Holy Spirit (who is Jesus according to them) evidenced by speaking in tongues. ...... I didn't care to dialogue about this, as I have far more important things to deal with in ministry. One of the guys who embraces the Oneness deal is a man I grew close to in seminary in Chicago. I felt bad about his direction. Tell me more about your "apologetic studies" and just what this entails in your faith. Thanks, Pastor Dave

Pastor Dave, out of respect for the members of the forum., let's take the church shop talk where all won't be forced to work at avoiding the chat they don't want to see. I'll PM you with my questions and answers regarding things spiritual. Okay?

So, how did things turn out for the puppy? Curious as to what the vet says. This is only my opinion, Bob but I don't think Pastor Dave should have to limit anything he chooses to speak of in his own thread.

We all grown ups in a world full of many different beliefs. This is his thread and he should be able to discuss anything he chooses.

There are plenty of threads that have conversations that are not dog related Many that Pastor Dave would probably prefer to not read (I'm involved in a lot of them lol) but EVERYONE in this forum should be able to discuss their own topics especially in their own threads.

Since I basically hijacked Dave's thread about Christ related issues, and am the instigator of the redirection, I was trying to be polite and not turn a question regarding a Dog's health issues into a spiritual discussion on doctrine and dogma. Mixing the two, seems like a way to frustrate the folks that don't care about the things of Christ and want to focus on the original topic, to wade through what may be a dry and convoluted discussion on dogma and doctrine. Now if nobody truly cares, I have no problem with keeping this stuff in-thread. I was not reprimanding Pastor Dave, I was trying to show courtesy to all.
