"installment payment" on Puppies

Re: "installment payment" on Puppies

I am actually doing this right now.
The litter Im getting my girl from is due the end of july, and I sent my deposit in months back and from then on (after asking the breeder of course) I have been sending increments here and there to bring my balance down.
I did have a puppy fund at my bank; but being honest, I didn't/don't want that money anywhere near me. Not that I would spend it, but if anything came up, I wouldn't want to dip into it (if that makes sense? lol) So I want it Out of Sight, Out of Mind.
I appreciate her letting me do this, as 1- Its helping me out in the long run, by not having a huge balance to come up with 2- showing her Im responsible and making sure I have funds for the pup
3- that Im serious about getting a pup from her
And my pup will be paid for by the time she is 6 weeks old, as per contract states. I will also have paid the shipping fees and have the 1st training class paid for as well as the first 2 vet visits.
I was fully prepared with a budget from the time I sent in my deposit and have an amount from each of my paychecks written out to send :)
I am a list-maker, clearly lol, and this was the best option for me. And Im glad to have found a breeder to be so understanding

You can't equate fast $$$ with a good home. I know that many people have access to cash and can buy any puppy. However easy money leads to "disposable" property and impulse buying. People who scrimped and saved to buy the dog of their dreams usually make the better home. I would rather a pup go to a good working home have good care and a proper life and should the unfortunate happen (say over a $2500) surgery, they elect the dog be put down, I'm ok with that. The dog had a better life than the dog sold to a $$$ home, kept in a small area, played with 30 min. a day and otherwise ignored by the very busy multi-income family with cash to burn.

I LOVED this. Yes, money does play a part, but I'd rather see the dog go into a home and is completely integrated. Money doesn't mean a good home and lack of money doesn't mean a bad one!

For me, it is a lot more paperwork to have to deal with. Keeping track of who owes what, who made their weekly payment, and writing receipts adds up to more time.

But I have done it for several puppy buyers with the pup paid in full by the time it is picked up. I believe good rapport helps here, and I judge on a case-by-case basis.

Just my $.02

Part of the answer lies in whether or not you'd rather give a pup for free to a great home or sell a pup to a lousy home. If you'd give a pup for free to a great home, then surely you'd sell the same pup to the same people on some sort of payment plan.

That said, if you focus on trying to breed world-class dogs, you shouldn't have much trouble placing them in healthy homes at appropriate prices. Breeding pet-quality to pet-quality is a whole other story, though...

Some of you are FAR too nice- When we bought Triton we went out to meet the breeder and see the dogs, fell in love and dropped the $500.00 deposit right there to ensure we were in line for a pup. We scheduled pick up and brought the remaining balance however the day before my dad called and said he would really like to purchase the dog for the kids and he wanted to put it on one of his credit cards- Our breeder would not accept a credit card. I have to say I was amazed at the expenses a breeder must put out for each litter! I used to think it was like a business and they were making bank but then really visiting with ours and finding out that one of their EM's had to have a C-section. I don't think after all the time, effort, love and money a breeder puts out for their pups that it's fair for them to be screwed over so I don't think I'd take installments.

Re: "installment payment" on Puppies

We made three payments for Hank. The deposit was one third the total and then I took by another third during a visit. We paid the last when we picked him up. We could have waited and paid just the deposit and then the rest when we picked him up but I was so anxious about everything. Thankfully our breeder was laid back. He didn't care as long as he found the right homes. Hell one woman he even took half of what he was asking because she was so in love with a pup but afraid the asking price would cut her too thin around Christmas. She picked up the same day we did. She was crazier than me about the pups.
