Since the Boerboel was really developed on the road per say (During the Groot Trek by the Boers 1835) then was continued during the Boer Wars 1877 it was bred and developed with a certain temperament. Strength and agility was also needed for survival as well as protection work. Size was brought on later for the farm and homestead but the agility and stamina was retained. If you were to add lets say a Labrador (any color) you would change so many dynamics of the breed that is would no longer be a Boerboel which translates Farmer Dog, you would soften the dog, shorten it, lengthen the coat change the pigment (needed for the African climate), the muzzle would be longer and the teeth smaller. While it is possible that all these breeds were indeed used to create the breed in the first place that part was finished as a chef might say the soup is perfect don't add anything else. The Boers put together the recipe and we should respect that and leave it as it is.

I guess my question would be what makes everyone so certain that the boers them selves didn't introduce a black colored dog are didn't breed a boerboel from another region that had black dogs in his are her pedigree from them introducing other breeds to create there boerboels.

Are you guys saying that there are no black boerboels that meet the standard and have the temperment of a less say fawn boerboel? Have you noticed that black boerboels have weaker temp are less drives then fawn boerboels?

I've noticed in some of the psa trials and pp training exercises we do on the weekend we have a few boerboels and the larger boerboels are a lot more impressive looking but don't work as hard as the lighter, smaller framed boers that are typically fawn, black dark masked.

SABT/SABBA has appraised Black Dogs with high scores. No other org recognizes them or will appraise them. Regardless of if the Boers had black boerboels none were selected for the breeding program. There were 72 original dogs selected to represent the Boerboel, none of these were black. The standard was written at that time and specifically excludes black as an acceptable color. No one has checked to see if the black dogs have a different temperament, I have not seen any in any sort of PP work or any farm type work from anyone. It looks like they are all just kept as pets. If black was part of the original breed color we would have a thousand black dogs and they would just randomly pop up in a litter from every breeder not just the 2 or 3 that have produced a few dozen or couple hundred from one line out of 3 dogs that were illegally registered as brindle Boerboels.

The bigger Boerboels are something we are trying to avoid, this is not a farm dog it is a protection dog at the most. The smaller dogs are what was the original type dog was supposed to be. Bigger than a boxer smaller than a great dane is one of the things old breeders say. If you look at James' pack you can see a typical set of type some are a little larger but most are right in that perfect middle range. Many of the breeders here in the US are breeding these dogs that look like a giant pit-bull or American Bulldog with bulging muscles and heads so large the dog will end up with neck problems as they get older. Not what we would consider a working type dog.

Here is a pup that I think is on the road to perfect Boerboel. Not my dog and it is 5 months old.
