My first Boerboel

Hello everyone. I am about a week into owning my first Boerboel. My little princess is Dallas. She's 14 weeks and 30lbs (I think that's on the small side even for a female). She is doing great with crate training, with our children and our other dog (a 70lb 8 month old mixed breed). Here are pics of her dad (brindle) and mom (black).

She seems to have the pedigree to be a great looking dog. The biggest male in her litter is 40lbs so she's not that far off. She was the runt and has already passed two of the other females so she has a great personality and a lot of fight in her!

Thanks Thor, we get stopped so much by people saying they have never heard of the breed or seen a black one.

I see that they are following the advice and using dogs from Spitsvuur, Lukas Van Vuuren. If you do some research you will find that Lukas was asked by the SABT board (which he was a member of) to stop breeding black dogs and registering them as Brindle to get them past the set standards. Later while Lukas was still on the board the standard was changed to accept the black dogs. It's a real shame and people still do not understand the impact it has had on the breed.

I got Dallas from Prominent Boerboel is Va. Her dad is Gandalf and her mom is Michelle. Prominent Boerboel - Home

Do you think black boerboels should be accepted? I don't know what type of registration Michelle (mom) has but the match appears to really be official!

I will give my opinion and I hope to not offend you.
The black boerboel is a myth it does not exist in Boerboel purity. All the current black dogs come from one of 3 dogs with broken pedigrees and one even came from a petshop and was faked into the kennels registration. The dogs were originally brought into the SABT registry under false pretenses as brindle dogs, not black because black was not an accepted color at that time. Later the standard was rewritten to allow black dogs. All the black dogs being called boerboels can be traced back to pretty much one point of origin, Spitsvuur Kennels, and the dogs Muller Poppy, Muller Lady and Petshop Jim. If the "Black Boerboel" was real it would be popping up in all the breed lines not just one. I think these black dogs LOOK great but that does not make them a Boerboel. They have a mix of either Black Labs, Neo Mastiffs or maybe even black great danes. So no I do not think the black dogs should be accepted as Boerboels. Oh and the SABT is currently the only org that accepts the black color as far as I know and the South African Authority is currently investigating all the orgs standards and we expect that it will create one ORG that will have the final say on color. When he asked for the standards for the breed from all the orgs he requested the original standard that excluded the black color.
Here is something for you to chew on.
From a breeder member of the SABT, he admits that they cross bred in other breeds to get the black color.

I saw your fb post and it's great because it lists ramkat. Ramkat is an awesome specimen!!!! I'm not a breeder or into studding, appraising, etc. I am strictly a pet owner.

So I think the black boerboel is one of the best looking color variations there are. I would probably look at things differently if I was looking to profit or enter the world of ratings and all that stuff.

My best friend had a black male off of ramkat and was an AWESOME dog. He lived up to what a boerboel is in every way. His temperament, size, mobility, etc.

This topic is a lot bigger than I knew about. I guess people breeding them are ok as long as they have any one who will register them as long as they are honest and tell people that their dogs cannot be akc registered if black.

The origin of the breed altogether isn't completely known. Come on lol. Every breed has "unwanted" colors or features (like a rotty will disqualifying colors or markings). It's still a rotty!!! The pic attached it my friends black boerboel "Big". You can't tell me he's not impressive and people are lined up to pay his stud fee!!! I guess everyone has an option. I'd be honored to call a dog like him mind, call him whatever you want!

Were all the litter mates black or some brindle and tan as well?
If your pup is considered a mutt, then the rest of the litter regardless of colour are mutts too!
Don't worry about it cause the black parent looks amazing!

Yes Big is! And yes, black boerboels have some of the longest waiting lists! My friend who breeds boerboels has his black ones sold for litters in the future! They are awesome. Like the history states people were scared of black dogs and I can see why! When I met Big for the first time it was a life changing experience. I started making changes in my life to be able to get one lol!!! I look at my puppy and can't wait to see her grow!!!
